Hello, I'm just about ready to finish the bottom of the body and need some help. Hopefully the picks will work.
1: Where do I get the special compressed nuts that hole the console to the floor?

2: Do these hole look correct?

3: Do I need the large square hole if I'm going automatic?

you can still get them from GM! i just ordered some..look in a 1968-1969 assy manual...this will give you the part number.

also i think ricks ist gen has them.

oh yeah...i am also in the process of reproducing the reinforcement ring that goes underneith the floor around the shifter hole...see below....you cant buy this anywhere...

auto trans does use this same hole on 1967 camaro and firebird cars...

Personnally, I'd just cut some sheet metal, drill it for the existing boot ring screw hole locations, goober it up with seam sealer, and install it over the hole. If that give you a secure enough surface to mount whatever auto shifter you plan to use, that is.

69 did not have the reinforcement plate. The hole was cut out on the line with a torch.

There's a tool for installing the rivnuts for the console, but seems like folks have talked here about it not working too well. Do a search from about 2 years ago, and see if you can find a discussion on alternative methods to tighten the rivets.

Here are a few of my 69 during resto :)

Just a thought? The top shifter boot ring is almost close to what you would need but not exact, you could make it work? you can get them from year one the part #W156B for around $17.00. Just a thought

If you use aluminum Rivnuts, you don't need the special installation tool; just use an Allen capscrew and oiled-up AN washer, and a hex bit in your impact. Stick the Rivnut in the hole with the capscrew installed about halfway, hold the O.D. of the head with pliers, pull the trigger, and it will set instantly - then remove the capscrew. There's no way to install the steel ones without the special tool.

are you restoring your car to concourse? if not, why dont you go to your local lowes, home depot, or favorite hardware store and buy some well nuts? they are made of rubber so if you get one that fits perfectly into the hole, you wont need to hold it to screw the console down. it just compresses itself onto the sheetmetal. it probably is not as sturdy as the orginal nuts so i would not recommend standing on top of the console but it will do the job.
