I have a '67 RS/SS with a Muncie 4-speed. My speedo gear has come loose from the transmission. I can see where the collar should be tightened back on, but am having no luck getting my hand up there so I can get it started. It looks like something that's just supposed to be screwed on by hand.

Does anyone know any tricks to re-attaching that cable?

Thank you!

You may need to place the car on a lift or tall jack stands because one needs to be close to observe what is going on.

Hopefully, the alum collar (nut) isn't out-of-round requiring replacement of cable assembly. Make sure the nut is going on straight onto the trans bullet threads.

The car is up on jackstands now. I got under it last night and it looks like the collar is ok and the part it threads onto (the bullet?) is ok too. I just can't seem to get my hand and fingers in close enough to it to get the collar started.

Is there some tool that's made for that, or is it something that's supposed to be done when the transmission is not bolted up?

Sounds like the shifter is in the way. For '69 and all first gens (not sure on '667 and '68) the cable should attach to the passenger side. Is your attachment on the driver side behind the shifter?

I will try to get some digital pics of it and see if I can post them later tonight. There are 3 rods from the shifter in my way, but I think even if those are moved, there's not going to be any room. We shall see!!

He's got a 67, so it will be on the drvr side, if he doesn't have 69 or later Muncie. Saginaws are all on the drvr side.

Gehr may have to remove the linkage rods to gain access to thread the collar onto the bullet. Or get a smaller handed person to do it. It is tight area around the bullet. I've used a pairs of slip-joint pliers to barely tighten the collar. Any hard squeeze by the pliers and the collar is out-of-round.

I'll try taking off those linkage rods and see if I or my wife can get the collar threaded. I'm glad you mentioned the likelihood of bending that collar with a pair of pliers, because I had been thinking about trying to use some.

Thanks guys!

Hello,
I found this thread to be the closest to my question. I'm getting close to finishing this 67 completely from scratch. I've managed to route the speedo cable ok that goes to the drivers side of the Muncie 4 speed. The collar is fitting on the billet but stops turning about half way down to what I would think it should go. The collar is tight but the cable going into the collar is not cinching up tight against the trans. This cable connection is supposed to be tight, right? Could I be missing a washer or something? The cable fits like a garden hose with no rubber washer. thx
Mark.

It's supposed to be a tight fit against the speedo bullet.....It might be time for a new speedo cable as the flanged end is probably bent either that or the threaded collar......What I successfully accomplished on a car I had (1970 Chevelle SS454, equipped with a TH350) was installed a flat, rubber washer at the end of the cable, the kind of washers used in household faucets.

The cable end is square so you have to make sure that the cable end and the speedo gear are lined up first or they won't go together. I have a 67 w/Powerglide and I have TONS of room. Try puting the car in various gears to get the linkage to move around. Perhaps you will be able to find a gear that gives you more room. If not, then try a long pair of pliers, but don't use a lot of force and make sure the square on the cable end and the square in the speedo gear are lined up.

Take the little bolt loose that holds the hold down. The holder can be moved with out taking off. Take complete gear and bullet out and assemble and push back in and swing little holder in place and tighten. While you have out look at gear and o ring.

My speedo gear is on the passenger side of my car????
Is this right ? I thought i had a 68 muncie

So is mine!.....Just remember, early muncies= drivers side, later munchies= passenger side:yes::thumbsup:
