What is the difference between a 1 and 2 piece rear main seal on a 454 block? I do not know which one I have. I believe I need to know this so I know which type of flexplate to get. I will also need to know this when ordering my engine rebuild kit.
Thanks for answering this stupid question.

First - does your crank (the heavy bent-stick looking thingy...) have a round rear flange - or, a funny flat (sorta) flangy thing that the flexplate would bolt to
Next - does your oil filter spin directly on a machined area with a little threaded thingy comming straight off the casting for the filter - or, does it have a cast and machined recess that requires an adaptor with a pressure relief to be bolted on for the filter to screw to ???
Last - are the Camshaft (lighter, Bumpy stick looking thingy...) retaining bolt holes 'Verticle' (up and down from each other :) ) - or, 'Horizontal' (across from each other...)

If you answered "Yes" to the first part of each question - then it's a 'One-piece' rear seal engine...
If you answered "No" to the first part of each question - then it's a 'Two-piece' (or earlier MarkIV block)...

Or, give us the casting number and we can tell for sure...

With appolgies to Mr Jeff Foxworthy:
If it has no fuel pump boss; It's a one piece!
If it has a plastic timing cover held on by six bolts; It's a one piece!

The crank has a flat sort of thing that the flex plate wouold bolt to.

My oil filter screws on to what looks like an aluminum piece that can be removed/unbolted.

I dont ahve a cam yet.

I dont have the casting number right now because my shop where the car is, is an hour away and but I might go there Sunday.

It looks like from what you are telling me, it is a 2 piece.

It has the hole for the fuel pump. It did not come with a TC cover.

Larger Dave is right, if it has 6 timing cover bolts, it's a Gen 6 (1 piece). However, the early 1-piece (Gen 5) used the old 12 bolt timing cover, just went to the newer cast aluminum one on Gen 6's. If it hasn't been altered since new, it should have cast aluminum valve covers if it's 1-piece. The casting numbers are your best bet. Post 'em here, we'll help if we can.

Definitely a 2-piece. That's the most common Mark IV that I've come across. It should have outboard cooling holes along both decks for parallel cooling which is a good thing. Mark IV has the widest availability of aftermarket cranks, etc., so I'd say it's a good one as long as it's been checked for cracks, etc..

It should be cast into the tranny ledge on the opposite side from the block casting number. It generally starts with a letter, then a few numeric digits.
