i am contimplating carrying a fire extinguisher in my car do yall think it is necesarry to...in the trunk in the interior what...i have seen alot of old cars go up in smoke that didnt have one and my dad is old school and is hassleing me to get one should i or should i not.....in the s. louisiana heat he may have a point to get one since it gets over 100 in the summer here in baton rouge

Always a good idea. And guys, if you have rubber line going to your carb, replace it with metal! I have seen a few cars burn down over this, and it could be avoided so easy. Just my opinion, Mike. P.S. your dad is not hasseling you, he is just a bit wiser for pushing it..........

It doesn't hurt to carry a fire extinguisher. I have one in each car. They have smaller ones if you are worried that it is going to take up space.

You can learn quite alot from listening to those that have done it before you, good luck bud!

Better to have one and not need it than to need it and not have one...of the few things I have mandatory in my cars a fire extinguisher is one...I also have a few in key areas of my house.... I just used one to put out a fire in my entry way that was caused by a defective light fixture that started my ceiling joist ablaze...they are inexpensive and good to have around.

After seeing that pic,
I plan on keeping a fire extingushier in the car,
and install an emergency hood release from inside the car.
Thank you for the lesson..

short true story

ive always carried one. never had to use it. one evening me and my bro are installing a motor into a blazer for someone else when up comes his little brother in his 73 camaro sliding to a stop jumps out and yells my cars on fire. he had his hood open by time i got to his car after stopping at mine and grabbing mine. pulled pin poof halon snuffed it right out with no mess. ilet him have that one and he used it several more times over next few days. till he got to tranny replacement. had i not had one i woulda moved my car further away from his. i still have a fresh one mounted on side of center console always within reach cause u never know.

btw halon leaves no residue and can put out gas fire without opening hood. its drawn to the fire right thru grill if necessary.

your call u decide weather or not to carry but dont put on pillar in sun like these kids today lol

Wally-World....$10. Kidde makes a "Auto" extinguisher that has velcro strips for attaching.
Talk about cheap insurance ! With all the $$$ we have tied up in our rigs, why wouldn't you have the sense (and cents) to carry one?

I installed one last year, that picture says it all.

As a cop I have come across numerous car fires. I even had to do a traffic stop on a VW bug doing sixty in a 55. He thought I was going to give him a ticket for speeding, but the reason I stopped him was his engine was on fire (oil accumulation on engine from old style road draft tube ventilation) and wanted to put it out before it burned through to gas line. He was surprised when I got out and ran up with a fire extinguisher.

In that capacity I have noted that you never have a big enough extinguisher. The five pounders are only a decoration on a car, there sole use is in the kitchen, for a stove top fire. There isn't enough chemical to knock down a hot (heat) gas or oil fire (fuel) in an automobile because the fire is too large to deny it air (oxygen) which is how the chemical extinguisher works. A 15 pound extinguisher in the trunk (they have mounting brackets to secure them) can however save a car if applied in a timely fashion.

x2.

Don't buy a "decorative" one. You don't need to pick up a garage sized extinguisher but at least buy a smaller ABC Kidde or equivalent.

On top of that, MAKE SURE YOUR EXTINGUISHERS are charged.

I never leave home without one, even have one mounted in our family vehical.
But it is only the 5 pound type, so I may have to get a bigger one or carry two 5 pounder.
