I was ready to buy a JD L145 - in fact would have if it were in stock - but took a second look at Cub Cadets. For about the same money I got the Kohler engine instead of Briggs and Straton with 25 vs 22 HP, Deluxe seat with arm reats, deck washer design, nice double row front bumper, 50 in deck instead of 48 in. They both had auto trans, cruise, and 22 inch tires. Bought the Cub and brought it home today - bummer it's raining. Oh well that will give me an excuse to take a day off next week when the sun is shinning.

My 20 HP diesel Kubota with 54" deck allows me to mow 2 acres in just over 1.5 hours if I go nonstop. I've had it for about five seasons and it just keeps going.

my Father worked at Deere for the last 35 years, many friends and friends of friends work there also (Iowa/Illinois member here, home of JD). So, I would assume my information is fairly accurate.

When HomeDepot/Lowes can sell me a X485 or similar, I'll say they're the same thing. 'Till then, I'll stand by my comment that Deeres from mass merchandisers and from Dealers are two completely different animals.

To your point, Lowes and HD sell the lower end lawn tractors and the JD dealers sell the higher end garden tractors. My JD dealer also carries the low end lawn tractors for the folks that have to think they are getting a bargain and can't be convinced to pony up for a better tractor.

I'm actually doing a frame off restoration on my JD right now. I'm waiting to get my body back from paint. Maybe a mini tremec is in my future, guess I'm one of those people that can't leave well enough alone....

Any recommendations on riding mowers?
