Words & Phases (Camaro Related) that bug me...

I was just reading a bunch of ads for parts and other stuff (not on this site) and started to think about words and phrases, relating to Camaros, that really bother me...so I thought I would vent a little bit.... :mad: :confused:

1. Donor Car - In my opinion people shouldn't be destroying one car to fix another...If the donor car is that good, why not fix it?

2. Unrestorable - I don't think anything is unrestorable...especially can't stand some of these guys who think if there's a little bit of rust that the car is shot.

3. Numbers Matching - I just can't stand how much this is used incorrectly.

4. Parted out - It's totally against my opinion to 'part' a car out. I saw an ad that said 'parts from a Z28 I just parted out. Why would you do that. There aren't any more of these car being made.

5. Worthless 6cyl - All I can say is that there were less 6cyl convertibles made in '69 than Pace Cars! Technically a 6cyl convertible is more rare (maybe not more desirable) than a Pace Car.

6. Cut Up - There is no first Gen that deserves this. I have seen guys cut up perfectly good bodies with a sawzall. Why?

Sorry to vent a bit, just really annoyed at some of the ads I was reading today, I'll be alright......deep breath......ahhhhhh.....

what if someone has a nice, clean, straight 69 Z/28 that takes a hard hit to the rear- so bad that the rear bumper is literally in the back seat or something. would you fix the car up, or sell off the good parts from that "donor" car so that another Camaro may live- or even a LOT of different Camaros? if most of the interior, doors, front sheetmetal, engine, tranny, and front subframe are all good, why not put them to use- since, as you say, they aren't making too many of them anymore?
THAT is usually why classic old musclecars get parted out.
as for people thinking a car is shot if it has a little rust- that is usually the opinion of someone who doesn't want to spend as much as someone wants for a car, so they point out every flaw they can find. it's part of the hobby.
6 cylinder cars are usually worth a lot less price-wise- but those are the cars to get if you want to make a street machine that can be driven, as they tended to not get beaten as bad as the V8 cars, and you aren't so worried about wrecking original parts that were installed on the car from the factory- you are too busy wailing on that 30,000 mile DZ302 you got out of that poor 69 Z/28 that took the hard hit in the tail to worry about if the "numbers matching" date coded water pump is gonna go out or not...
i just noticed- you have a car listed in your sig as a "basket case". what is meant by that? is it un-restorable? does it have a speck of rust on it? maybe it should become a parts car...

I wasn't asking you to flame me, I was simply stating that there are some things I don't particullarily (sp?) care for. As for my 'basket case'...it is not a parts car, and the reason that it is labled a basket case is because of this site. I got the car from EBay awhile back and was contacted by a few people here. There was a thread started and 99.9% of everyone said it was a basket case. I leave that statement there as a reminder of days gone by and that someday I will get a chance to restore it.

As far as your Z28 example goes, sure there are extreme cases. I wasn't refering to that. I was refering to people who randomly destroy cars for cash.

Sure, cash makes the world turn 'round..i suppose... but I still don't think it's right.

I think you took my post way to far out of context.

I cut the sail panels off this car because they were free.

I wanted the ones off the blue car in the background but the owner had someone who was paying to cut the whole roof and sail panels from it. I priced sail panels from 2 different boneyards, thay wanted between $200 and $250 for each side :eek: . So I went this route.

You can take all the parts you want and put them together to make a car!! But come licensing time, you had better have an OEM VIN on the main part of the body proper where it belongs and matching title or you won't get plates!!

I was standing right next to a parted together P/U in St. Louis at one of the smog stations and the cab didn't have a VIN on it!! AND the guy was upset that he couldn't get it inspected to get plates!! He had the BOS's of most of the large component parts to prove it was his truck that he bought parts for AND put together but that didn't matter!!

It was one of the mid '70's GM P/U's that kinda would disappear before your eyes as they rusted away and he was proud of getting it cheap and trying to bring it back to life but to no avail with out a stock VIN!!!!!

I understand what your saying Bill. I feel the same way. The car has to be pretty bad for me to give up on it.
It may be that our passion goes a tad deeper, almost to insanity, ;) to save these cars or any car we really love.
I've been told by several people that they would've parted my RS out before fixing it like I did.
There are certain cases yes, where a car is just too far gone to save. That opinion varies widely but for me, the car has to be just about bent in half from the floor to roof, or rusted out so bad the skeleton is severely damaged.
Anything other than that in my world anyway, could be saved.
Like I said, that opinion varies.
Maybe it goes back to me having to eat EVERYTHING on my plate. No waste. LOL :D
O.K. we won't go there.
Anyway, I know what you mean.

He, He!! Eat everything on my plate!! You too!!

My Dad was BIG on that b/c he was dirt poor as a kid and he would mouth at us for hours until we cleaned our plates or Mom would let us go after he left the room to go read the paper!!

Boy, does THAT bring back kid memories...

my response wasn't meant to be a "flame", per se, but if you took it that way, that's fine. but when you make an all inclusive list of things you hate like that, you gotta expect someone who isn't so much a purist to take it from there and maybe turn it around on you.
hell, i've said it before and will say it again- when the nice folks that draw the Powerball numbers finally pick the right numbers (the ones on my ticket), i'm gonna head to the Barrett Jackson shindig and get me a ZL1 and thrash it til the aluminum 427 engine blows, then throw a smogger 2 barrel 305 in it with a powerglide and a 2.73 one wheeled 10 bolt- just for kicks. same with an LS6 Chevelle convert. and i will get a Ferrari AND a Lamborghini for winter beaters...

Derrick, have you ever disliked a car so much that you trashed it for fun? I had a datsun b210 like that and I beat it like a red haired step child and it still didn't die! :D

No matter how much money that I had I don't think that I would beat on a ZL1 or LS6 until they were junk....although if I had the money I wouldn't be afraid to have fun with them!

The idea of having a Ferrari and a Lamborghini for winter beaters sounds cool (wouldn't want to mess up the ZL1 or LS6)!! :D


And to all of you that always clean your plates....I have discovered that has been the biggest contrubutor to my ever expanding waistline! :eek: I suppose I could put less on my plate, but that never works either as I just go for seconds (and clean the second plate whether I'm full or not)!!

He, He!! Waistline!!!

I guess I have too much respect for anything that gets me there and back that I don't have to constantly worry if it will make it to beat on it UNTIL I KILL it!!

I learned early on that if I tore it up, I had to do one of two things, FIX/REPLACE IT OR beg MY mom for something else AND IT was always REAL HARD swallowing my pride ta beg my MOM for help so you get the picture!!!

Mom's gone now so I'm on my own and am next in line.. AND I'm still trying real hard to instill this in my three kid's today.....

Get something you want/like AND take care of it, cheaper in the long run!!!!!

Someone like Stevo - who has the skills in body and paint and has the tools and a place to actually do the work, is more likely to save the car.

The guy who has never worked with a welder, a hammer and dolly or a spray gun and doesn't have a shop or tools would part out.

It really doesn't have anything to do with whos more into the cars anymore than owning a survivor vrs pieced together 6cyl with a 502 in it or a ZL-1.

It's all about economics...
