As a follow up to a few recent posts about the quality of tools I though I'd ask of these brands which would be considered the best for the $$ at least for a DA sander or mud hog:
Mac
SnapOn
Ingersol Rand
Chicago Pneumatic
Hutchins
Craftsman
Astro
I know that generally speaking you get what you pay for. But in particular I've recently used 4 or 5 different DA sanders and mud hogs in class. I've used a SnapOn, Ingersoll Rand, Some Japanese brand I couldn't pronounce, and a Chicago Pneumatic. Of these the Chicago Pneumatic seemed the best and I just saw it in a catalog for $60. I would have thouht that model would have been over $200 to compare to the SnapOn I used that is $239. It's a 6" model 870. I think the one I used was one of the school's which means it's been around a good while and been beat on pretty hard. Anybody have experience with CP or in particular that model?

I have had most of my hand tools for 30 years and they are MAC. When I started my Camaro project, I bought alot of air tools and such from Harbor Frieght. I have to say they were priced right and I have not had a single problem from any of them. Keep in mind, I only use them as a hobby and I can say how well they would last for a pro. I've been real happy though.

As I said in my Basics of buying tools editorial my brothers quote says it all "I have never said, damn I wish I would have bought the cheap tool".

National Detroit Da and 900 "Bondo hog" are what I have in my tool box. I have over twenty years in both of them using them every day.

If I wanted to sell them, I could get MUCH more for them than the new ones at Harbor Freight. THAT says a lot as far as I am concerned.

It is an eight inch orbital sander. Sort of a big "DA". They are VERY useful, if mine were to break and they now had went up to a thousand dollars, I'd STILL buy a new one.

They are about two hundred so I have two.

That is a National Detroit 900, I feel it is the best going.

At the shop in which I work. We use all Hutchins D/A's for the palm D/A. We use Ingersol rand for the normal D/A's. Im not sure about the 900's though...Im only 17 and i just started a year ago. so i just work on Feathering out jobs, cleaning up aftermarket and new parts, and wetsanding and rubbing stuff.
