My antenna mast is pretty rough, and the base isn't too great, so I am thinking of replacing. What should the original antenna look like? Does anyone have a good description or picture? Mine isn't round, but "oval" shaped. What would have been original? Anyone know who sells a good repro?

The antenna on my 67 coupe is original and it's a telescoping oval shape. The 'head' has a notch or groove going around it. Repops are in all of the resto catalogs - Rick's, NPD, etc. Repops are also on EBay ALL THE TIME. If you want to get fussy, original GM NOS antennas come up on Ebay less frequently, but there's usually one up for auction every other week or so. Be careful, however, because the mounting base on the 69's are different from the 67/68's, and not all sellers make that distinction.

Ditto for the mounting bases. I believe all three years used the same antenna to fender rubber gasket.

Here's a picture of the base of the front fender mounted antenna on my 69 Corvair. This is the same AM antenna as used on the 69 Camaro - P/N 993631.

Hope this helps...

EDIT: OOPS! I just realized that you are looking for info on a 67 AM antenna. Sorry. The 67 AM antenna is a Camaro only item, P/N986819.

The 67 antenna kit is different for a rear deck lid antenna than for a front. I have one of each on my 67's. I suggest you contact MacNeish as he had several NOS assemblies but he's running kind of low. I bought from him NOS front 67, NOS rear 67, and NOS front 69. Each time, I got NOS instructions, bezels, mast, cabling, clips, etc -- the whole shebang.

I believe that the AM/FM antenna was fixed round when it mounted to the front fender. The AM antenna could be mounted on the front fender or rear quarter panel.

Farmboy and 67CruiseMasterCamaro are correct. I neglected to ask whether you were asking about an F< or AM antenna.

You can reach Jerry MacNeish at 410-781-8418 9am-5pm EST. Tell him "Denny sent me and he asks how's the bird doing?".

Farm Boy's picture shows a correct 67 antenna. I don't have the 67 AIM in front of me right now, but from what I recall, the antenna 'mast' used was the same for the front and the back - only the mounting bases were different. The repops in Rick's catalog look correct. Nowadays, I prefer original GM parts when I can find them, but not everyone is that discriminating. Sometimes you don't have a choice. I wasn't that fussy 25 years ago when my 67 was my ONLY vehicle. If a hose or belt went, whatever the local parts place had was good enough. Now that it's not my sole means of transportation, I can afford to wait for the correct GM part to come along.

So now, the next question, how do I get it off? I have what appears to be original, but the mast needs replacing, as does the black plastic piece below the nut. My past just pulls off, but I don't know how to remove the rest - or at least loosen it - to replace that piece. Apparently the previous owner didn't either, as there are some tool scratches on the base.

loosen the big nut and the "black thing" will fall into the trunk with the backing plate you can see from inside the trunk. Ill fax you the asm manual dwg if you have a fax....

I have rear antenna and large nut had different ID where mast exits and thread pitch differed from some of the NOS replacements. The repop pitch was correct but ID approx 1/8 larger...apparantly rear nut differs from other years as well, or front to back are different. HBC rooted thru a box of a couple of hundred NOS before they found a match (at least thats the story..lol)..

Mine is on the front, so if I loosen the big nut, its going to fall behind the fender, which will really be a pain. I tried to loosen the big nut once before and it didn't seem to want to turn, the whole assembly seemed to want to. I guess I need to be holding the backside (inside the fender) while turning the outside (the big nut). That would mean removing the fender, I guess, which I don't really want to have to do.

Yea I realized yours wasnt in the trunk a couple of minutes ago....reach between the inner and outer fenders and grab it.....you can do it lol....never had to but ....does it help to have the door open thru that opening?

If you plan on spending some quality time with your Camaro, do yourself a favor and invest $30 in a Factory Assembly Instruction Manual. It's the best money you'll ever spend. Everything you could stand to know about antenna's, mounting brackets, part numbers, front and rear mounting diagrams, etc. is shown in great detail in sections U63-B1 and U73-A1.

Trust me - you will find your nose in this book over and over again.

Yes, I bought one when I bought the car. What the pictures don't show is how to get things apart, it just shows them apart - telescoped if you will. The pictures are also lacking when parts were similar or when detail is needed.
True enough on your last statement, but the referenced part numbers take some of the mystery out of it all. Beyond that, that's when this site comes in real handy. If this case, the AIM helps you to understand what pieces and parts are attached to the antenna underneath the fender where you can't see them.
