I have quik ratio steer, it seams to just spin the steering wheel with just a touch. Its twitchy on the highway. I would like to not have so much power assist. I know ther is a control valve in the pump but is that an adjustable thing for lowering psi to give less assist? Spring change or something? Mabe a big hammer? Any Ideas steering Gods?

I too am interested in this answer. I haven't installed the quick ratio yet, but the winter is coming fast.

Steering effort is controlled by the valve in the steering gear, and it's not easily adjustable, tho a shop that rebuilds these gearboxes could do it.

Many of us have swapped to a thirdgen box to get a "less assisted" feel to the steering, search thirdgen box in suspensions and you will find MANY posts.

Thanks Jim, Is it in the box itself ? I saw a control valve in a diagram showing in the pump. I assume it is to control preasure. I did read some posts saying a 30lbs valve is good in 1st gen oe: box. I still dont know where to start my efforts. Its a winter project, just thinking ahead. I would like to keep the ratio, Just add some resistance. Sure looks from other posts I need to be carefull of heat created with some control valves. Are you runnin 3rd gen box? If so original pump style ?

Ok Guys This is what I found, The control valve is at the input side of the gear box. The (spool valve ) can be replaced to a mid 80s type with a larger torque rod to give the less assist feel to a first gen box. It would allow me to keep the quick ratio. I need a rag joint for a mid 80s camaro to work with the change of input shaft of the new spool valve. 135.$ for a local shop. The valve I talked about before was the psi releif valve in the pump. The new torque rod size has to be overcome to allow the fluid to assist, therfor a stiff at nuetural position feel.

It sounds like you have the stock quick ratio steering that is not "firm feeling" or "high effort". Heidts makes an adjustable control valve that is installed in the hoses. Many years ago, I inquired about this, and Art Rasmussen (Before his death) stated that he had used this in one of their race cars. He said it worked great.

I don't have experience with the Heidt valve, but I have doubts it would work nearly as well as changing the torsion rod inside the box which is how Saginaw changes steering feel. Driving a street car you have a lot of time to notice the steering feel, your best shot at good feel is to change the torsion rod, or get a later box.

If you run out of pressure, changes in the pump valve orifice or pressure shims can be done.
