When everyone says they have a 350 with 400 to 450 horse, what are you really saying? That the motor has 450 HP or you have 450 HP at the wheels (rwhp). There is a huge difference between the two, and I am curious as to what most of you are refering to when speaking of HP. Thanks.

I just think you need to take it in context. If I say "I've got a 383 with 450hp" then it's the engine. If you're talking about the car, people SHOULD mention the rear wheel horsepower (because of tranny loss, etc.), but I don't think everyone always does.

There's all kinds of horsepower. You've got Desktop Dyno horsepower, Engine Analyzer horsepower, magazine test horsepower, "my machinist told me" horsepower, Westec dyno horsepower, other dyno horsepower, chassis dyno "what's that at the crank?" horsepower, and dragstrip results horsepower to name a few.

Ad infinitum! That's why racing was invented.

its the same thing when someone says 'how strong you are' then the question comes...."how much can you bench?" ....when strength (aka...horsepower) is measured in several diferent ways....:beers:

This is exactly why I posted this topic. To see all the different views everyone has. And funny how people from the same area tend to think & speak the same way about things.

Raw or shirted? If shirted, synthetic or denim? Single or double ply? :D
LOL......Too funny....but very true!! and .....Raw....if shirted, denim....

And your profile says "weightlift" HA!......I thinks you'z Power Lift!

I have the DeskTop Dyno-POS-and I can make over 400 hp, I have parts that claim I will get over 400 hp, I have had people tell me that what I have will make my 355 over 400 hp but on a chassis dyno I didn't even come close using the 20% loss factor. I really don't want to spend more on another computer dyno so I am thinking of removing the solid lifter cam and putting the hydraulic back in. I will read more on the S/R Torquer compared with the Vortecs. decide which will help the most, and just lick my spending wounds. Like you, I have read a lot of 400 this and 400 that but each magazine tells you something different!

You foregot the one most people use BS horsepower.
Bob
Too funny! BSHP!!!:hurray:

I would still rather see a mph in the quarter and actual weight of a car than be told "I make so and so hp...". Its pretty funny all the people out there in carland that make 500, 600, 700 hp or more yet their car cant get down the track with more than some moderately low mph. Then come the excuses, the track was wet, my tires ran off, my girlfriend was in the car or whatever. The track doesnt lie. I had my car on a dyno once and only once in San Antonio with a Camaro Club and it made 450hp at the wheels or so yet the car runs 133 in the quarter and wieghs 3720lbs... :clonk:
