Hey guys, I took my camaro to the track on Saturday for the first time. I did the burnout and then my car died and didn't want to restart. I cranked and cranked on it and it finally started like it flooded itself. I carb is a 650 double pump 4777-4. I have it pulled apart right now to verify what jets, etc are in it. I bought it off of Ebay from a guy stating that it was brand new and only used for a few months then he changed carbs. Well, it looked new, but when I pulled it apart it still had the old paper gaskets in it. So im rebuilding it with nonstick gaskets, etc. Anyway, the jets are 67, 73, and it had a 6.5 PV. I need a 5.5 PV based on my vac at idle. I have 11 at idle and 8 in gear. This is with mixture screws turned 1.5 out for highest vac. I also learned that my MSD street fire distributor has a very slow advance curve from the factory. My timing was set at 32 deg. The car still ran 95mph in the 1/4 with a good bit of tire spin. 60ft was 2.22. Two known issues are up timing to 36 deg, bring advance in by 2800-3000 and tune carb. Does anyone else have any advice on what I should do to take care of that stalling problem after doing a burnout?

your rear float level is too high.

When you got on the brakes after the burnout the nose dives, and the rear bowl sloshes fuel towards the boosters and floods the car.

if its not too high you need to change your burnout procedure.

Ditto what Brian and Eric said. You also need to "clear out" the engine after your burnout (rev it slightly a few times before staging). You can also add a rubber hose from primary to secondary vent tubes with a hole cut in the top of the upper bend, this will help prevent fuel slosh from getting into the carb. One last thing if you get in that situation again hold your foot to the floor when you crank the engine and it should fire up, holding it open lets more air in to help fire the flooded engine.

What tires are you using?

I ask because a burnout before a run that nets a 2.22 60' says to me that everyday street tires are being used, which would probably perform better without a burnout.

Oh well. I was going to suggest some stuff but these guys beat me to it. They're really good.

Eric is on the money. Dont dry set, do it with car running. Factory wants you to run the fuel level to the bottom of sight, withe a slight trickle coming out if you bump the car. If I run it at that level, the car will stall under hard braking. I suggest lowering the fuel level so that you have to bump the carb hard to get it to trickle out.

i wouldnt personally run it that low, infact i just set the floats with a 7/16" drill as a feeler gauge.
I dont ever have problems with them unless i really stab the brakes after the burnout, in that case i just clear it out with a few whacks of the throttle.

Never had any problems setting the floats with the bowls off. Do the hose between the vent tubes trick it really works. good luck, it will get better especially with your timing being that not the best for the track.

Thanks for everyone's help. I put the carb back together this evening and got it back on the engine. I will reset mixture screws and set floats, etc tomorrow. I also want to tune the advance curve on the distributor. I'll keep everyone updated. Thanks again

I think everyone else has offered the best advice so I`m just going to ask how you like your cam? It`s the 270 Mega right?

It is a very nice street cam. It is the 270 mega. It idles at 750rpm and pulls about 11" of vac at idle. My power brakes work fine, no problems. My heads are a little on the big side for it, but i got a heck of a deal on them and couldn't pass them up. A 180cc runner dart or brodix head with this cam would probably make great torque. Even with the 200cc heads, the power is great, even with it being out of tune. I'm trying to get the carb and timing figured out. I just learned last night that my throttle cable was misadjusted and I wasn't getting full throttle. This should run well into the 13's once I have everything straightened out. Thanks again for everyone's help.
