I have a 400 SBC in a 68 camaro. The tranny is a 350 turbo with a 3000 stall. With 355 gears in the rear... The cam spec's I have now are quite large and are listed below. Can you guys suggest a solid roller cam that would be "ok" on the street? I am also looking at the 4/7 swap for this cam. I plan on just swapping the cam and springs and keep the lifters since they only have maybe 100miles on them....

Yes, this does appear a pikes peak cam, rather large. Hope you are running at least 1.550 id springs. I am running a Comp Xr 282HR with large springs. It is streetable enuff for me with a tremac, and 3.73 gear, but there are others.
 
Check the Comp Cams catalog...I am sure they have something in the Xtreme Energy line. Does it have to be solid? I like my HR294 hydraulic pretty good...
 
That camshaft has a ton of duration for a 3000 convertor and a 355 gear. I was thinking something in the 240 @ 0.050 or lower range with that gear and convertor. Would have to hear more about the compression ratio, cylinder heads and induction to make a good suggestion.
 
hey johnred68. i just finished & fired my new 434 sbc about a month ago. it has a solid roller that specs out at 254/260 @ .050 & .582/.588 on the lift with 1.5 rockers. i'm running a 4000 converter with it & 4.10's out back. I LOVE IT!!! revs fast, pulls hard, & no complaints. i drive it everyday so far (weather permiting). if you are not planning on taking any long road trips in the car, i would not hesitate to run a solid roller on the street. comp told me to keep the lift under .600 & the valve springs will last much longer in a street application. look at the comp xtreme energy mech rollers. maybe the xr274r. all the comp 4/7 swap cams are too big for you converter/gears. maybe another brand?
 
For my part, once you get over 290-300 advertised on the duration a 3000 stall converter puts a 400 out of the torque band on launch, especially with 3.55s and if your head ports are over 200ccs. If the converter slips a lot it'll be real streetable, but at the drag strip with only 3000 stall, you're losing a lot of 60-foot time with 3.55s. When you get up around 300 degrees (250 @.050" nominal) you'll need a 3500-stall converter to make 3.55s work well. Bill--I love it! I'm screwing together a 406 with a Lunati 290/296 (adv.) --.591"/.598"--106 centerline solid roller with 1.5s and a 4200 stall and 4:11s in a '68. Can't wait to feel that sucker go sideways!
 
If starting from scratch there would`ve been no real need to use a solid roller in a driver 406.

Seeing you have the parts already though, you can do what the Camaro in my signature has, solid rollers on a hyd roller cam.
Light spring pressure, lighter weight lifters, especially horizontals. Lash them tight and you`re set.

Works just fine.

The heads that are on it are 292's.. The previous owner told me they were pro-ported. Comp. ratio is 11 to 1. The engine is in the car and "Runs" on the street now. But is a bit much for me. It can barely get out of its own way unless I hammer it. But when I do, watch out it take off like a bat out of hell..... With my power steering and power brakes it doesnt like to idle and stay running under 1100 rpm.... My old 350 I pulled had a mean Lopey Idle to it which I want to get back to but with alot more power.... With dd2000 it rates at 498hp.... but only 98lbs of torque at 2000rpm with my team g intake...
 
John, with that much camshaft and a 3000 convertor and 3.55 gear i can imagine a pig trying to get out of the slippery mud until you get about 5500 rpm:( I will find you the camshaft i would use a little later tonight. Once i post it everyone can weigh in and see what they think. Doug
 
With the drivetrain combo you have it doesn't leave alot of room to work with a solid roller. I would probly use this one if you are not going to change the gear in the car. Alot smaller than what you have now. The only thing i would do is to have comp cams grind it on a 108 lsa to bring the power curve alot tighter. I think 280 actual might be a bit low for a driver and 11:1 compression, moderate gears, and pump gas. It could maybe be done but thats really pushing it.
 
The cam in the sig is an UltraDyne 234/242 @.050 .530/.530 on a 108 sep.

The converter is a tight 2800-3200 9.5"
Shifting at a relatively low 5400-5600 rpm.

TH350 with 3.23 gears
