hi gang the question i have is i;am using a 302 motor in a different aplication other then a camaro what i would like to know as i have to use a short water pump will i have any problem using a balancer from a 283 327 on this engine or does anyone have a suggestion as to what one i should use i cant use the 8'' balancer not with the short water pump thanks for any help in advance
 
As others said, short water pump and 8 inch balancer will work. There is very little room, 1/16 inch clearance between the pump and balancer.

You should use a 302 balancer as designed because of the bobweight of the reciprocating assembly weight. Different strokes require different weight/thickness of balancer. See the difference between a 265/283, 307/327 and a 305/350 balancers. This from OE design. If the short block has been aftermarket balanced correctly, then use the corresponding harmonic balancer, IMO.
 
Not really so even tho GM did make a bunch of different SB balancers and at least one hub with just a pulley bolted on it..

Usually drag engines can use a hub or just the smallest you can find b/c they rpm fast up through the different harmonics for just a short time.

Whereas a road-race, Z-28 type engine need's as large a one as you can find b/c it run's up and down, up and down, up and down for a long race so needs to dampen as much harmonics as it can..

PS., a side note -- the old 348"/409"/427" "W" engines used dampers that fit SB's!!!
 
302 was available in 67 and 68, and those were short WP motors. Not sure what dia balancer they used. Just make sure you have the correct timing tab.
All 302 balancers were 8", I reckon the pulley made the difference for the different WP lengths, and yes the timing mark is different from 67-68 compared to the '69 model. I believe the early balancer is still a GM performance part...

Technology has changed quite a bit from the day when we just pressed a damper on and put a bolt in the crank! If a damper did not make that much of a difference why was there so many different sizes?..... BBC first

For instance damper P/N 3879623 is a 8 in. torsional damper. That particular part was used on internally balanced 67-67 427 engines. GM recomends to use crankshaft P/N 3967811 and use P/N 14044821 timing pointer.

SBC.....

P/N 6272221 is a 6.75 damper. it is a cast iron and was used on most 69 and later production 305 -350 engines. If I remember correctly this damper will also work well on the V-6 90 deg. racing engine.

P/N 3817173 is a 8 in. damper. This one came on engines from 62-68. This availible only on hi-perf. applications from the factory. It was 1 11/16 wide.

P/N 6272224 is also a 8in. damper. came on 70-74 350 LT-1,Z/28 and the L-82 and it is also 1 11/16 wide.

P/N 3947708 is a 8 in. damper and only came on the 69 Z/28 engine. It is 1 5/16 wide.

P/N 6272225 is a 8 in. damper that came on all the 400 in. sbc engines.

P/N 364709 was the 8 in. off road damper GM offered for classes where a cast iron damper of stock apperaence was allowed. this had a special hi-temp rubber used between the hub and the inertia ring.

Myself I use ATI dampers and have had great success with them. I also use a timing belt instead of a chain and gears! you only have to buy them once....
 
Don't forget the 3896966 8 x 1 5/16" SBC balancer used on 67-8 L48 SS 350 cars. That's what came on mine.
 
So you are using a "w" to identify a 348,409 and a Z-11 427 Mystery Engine. When I refer to a BBC should I use the words "Semi-Hemi" and with a SBC should I use the word "wedge" or even the words" Splayed Valve" for a SBC. Just havin' some fun!
