Well Guys, after all this time I finally saved and bought both switches I needed to fix the tranny in my 01 Dakota. Wanna say thanks to all the guys who gave their inputs! ESP Jageaureats(?)

Thanks!:beers:

Harley I hope this takes care of you problems. I finally fixed my 01 Dodge Ram this week to when I traded it in on an 04 LS1 6 spd GTO for my wife. The vast majority of Dodge truck owners I know or have met all have to rebuild their transmissions before they hit 100K miles. Chrysler has a real problem with these transmissions. One co-worker has had his rebuilt 3 times by 88,000, another twice by 80,000. My problems started at 60,000, the Chrysler dealer couldn't fix it, although they tried several times, throttle position sensor, govenor solenoid, many test drives where they didn't see a problem. At 84,000 it completely failed. Since Chrylser dealer was so poor here I took it to a local transmission shop that has a good reputation here. They rebuilt it and I had it back 3 times and they could never make it work right. It wasn't just the transmission, there were so many things failing on this Ram by 90,000 miles that I just couldn't keep up with it, some were major, many were just minor.

Needless to say I've bought my last Chrysler product. Next truck will be a Chevy or Ford, I've had great luck with both products.

I joke that the VW beetle guys give the peace sign to each other when they meet on the road, the Corvette guys wave or give a thumbs up, the Dodge Ram crowd we just hold the number of fingers to indicate to each other the number of times that we've had to rebuild our transmissions!

Seriously though good luck and I hope that this solves your problems.

Dave, believe it or not, this is the second best P/U ive ever owned. the first was also a Dodge 1996 Ram w/360. I have just been lucky I guess. My dad said take care of it and it will take care of you. Only the wife and kids get treated better, altho I hear otherwise...LOL

A million thanks Bill. !!!

Well, BAD NEWS. Truck wont move in drive but will in reverse and low. plenty of clean fluid.
Any ideas?
I dont have 2200 to fix this thing.
military pay......!

Been great for the last few days....I dont know what happened....

What did you switch?????

I'm sorry, I'm late on this one.(haven't been around in a few years)

I changed the Governor Pressure Solenoid and Governor Pressue Switch inside the valve body.

I ordered them from someplace in Florida, then bought a filter and fluid here. For $200 and 2 hours, the problem was solved. (Okay, I had to go to Autozone and have them clear the 1764 check engine code that was present. Also, Napa Prices were about 3 times as much for those two pieces)

We only had Drive and reverse. NO 1st, 2nd, or Overdrive.

I did EXACTLY what you did. Gov Solenoid and Gov press switch. Now I only have 1 and reverse......

Harley I'm sorry to hear your problems continue. I can relate, it isn't fun. My Dodge is gone because everyone I spoke with that owned a Ram has had problems with that transmission.

I went down the same road, dealer changed the govenor solenoid and it was good for a week or two, then right back to dropping in and out of gear at a steady cruise speed. The torque converter continued to fail, every morning the noise from it sounded like a power steering pump run dry for the first minute or two and the truck wouldn't move in gear until the noise went away. The dealer said they couldn't duplicate the problem. They replaced the throttle position sensor because the signal was noisy, problems continued, dealer took it mudding and tried to give it back to me without even washing the mud off the hood and roof. That's when I decided the Chrysler dealer was incompetent here in town.

Had a trans specialist shop rebuild it and the guy is normally been real good. He couldn't make this one work right. Tried all kinds of things, increasing pressure, aftermarket seals and torque converter, reflashed the power train module problems continued. He even modified something in the trans to allow it to pump fluid to the cooler in gear at idle. Apparently the Chrysler doesn't allow for it's fluid to be cooled when stopped and in gear at idle. Sounds like a bad idea to me. Other times when down shifting to pass on the highway it would not upshift into high gear for 2 or 3 miles and when it did it hit high ger so hard the whole truck would shudder and the check engine light would come on.

I hope you have better luck than me. I've decided to never own another Chrylser vehicle and certainly not one with this troublesome transmission in it.

Good luck.

Harley
I don't know Dodge tranny's, but if this is same as yours, then consider it yours. I gave it to PDQ and he hasn't fetched it so I can give it to anybody I want. I don't know any history on it and make no claims. Got told 3rd person it was 'good' what that's worth Idunno.

Thanks Tim. Thats a A904 I believe. Mine is completely different.

That's an A-500. It is an overdrive version of the 904.

What fluid did you put in the 46RE? If you use the wrong fluid, it will kill the tranny instantly. I think the 46RE takes Mopar +4 fluid.

What were your symptoms before you changed your solenoids?

Hey 57 Thanks for stopping by. It would not downshift at all, and would upshift only on occasion. So I pulled the codes and got a bad gov solenoid pressure code. so I swapped both the sensor and the solenoid, new filter, and Castrol atf+4 tranny fluid. trranny didnt last 60 miles...dont know what happened. now I dont have drive. I have reverse(if it sits in gear a min) and low. but it wont upshift....thanks

Yikes! That one is over my head. I was thinking bad governor, but that doesn't explain the lack of any shifts. Maybe an electrical connection issue? maybe a computer fault. I'm gonna have to say that I can't give any definite help on it. I know the 46RE is far more complex than my old 727's.

I ordered a tranny from Phoenix Hardparts Transmissions for $2000. They gave me a 4 year warranty. GREAT!! AWESOME!!! I get the tranny, go to the base Hobby shop to do the work, pull my old one-which took all day-, compare it to the new one...guess what? THEY SENT ME THE WRONG TRANSMISSION!!!! ARRGH!!!! They said they would send me a new one tho...They didnt send me a cooler either-which will void the warranty if I dont use it.
How could this happen? I called him and I verified which tranny I had. I KNOW I told him the 5 pin NSS switch. I wanna be mad, but all I can do is laugh at all my misfortune...HAHAHA

Harley
I bought a little Buick one time that seemed to be a great car. I was having new struts put in it, and called to check on it and they asked me if I knew the tranny was tough. It had been fine the day before when I had the Xwife go to get a tranny flush(won't ever do that again...both xwife or flush:D gimme a choice of the 2 and I'll flush a tranny:thumbsup: )...Long story short the tranny dumped 2 days before the vacation I was getting it ready for. I'm talkin chunks in the pan. But it would still go forward kinda if you weren't particular. I took the damthing to Ford and traded it in on a Grand Marquis and went on vacation. They don't care, all they want is for it to make it onto the lot so they can take it as a trade in. They run them through huge auctions if they aren't what they want to resell on their lot.
You're gonna take a hit somewhere on this thing. Might as well see if Phoenix will credit your card back, stick your old tranny back in and limp down to Chevy and get all the hicky on one finance. My 2 cents.
