I'd appreciate any thoughts on a problem I have. The car has had a ground up older restoration about 10 years ago from what I can tell. The number 1 spark plug keeps getting covered in oil and misfiring. We put an extender on it, removed the valve cover and replaced the top seal, but it didn't help. A few garages are telling me it must be the piston rings underneath and I might as well get a new engine. It's a 350 non number's matching engine, and wondering if it makes more sense to get a crate motor or can it be fixed for a reasonable amount?

thanks.

it's pretty cheap to rebuild the motor if you do the work yourself.

Oil getting inside a cylinder can come from 2 places. 1: piston rings 2:valve guide seals
The valve cover gasket replacement would have been if the oil is on the outside of the plug and the wire boot.

Considering how much oil he's saying is entering the cylinder....that sounds like a more reasonable problem than the valve guides or piston rings. All the years of hearing "valve guides or rings" and never hearing about any other way for oil to get in a cylinder like that. Very interesting.

If it was worn rings or a worn cylinder the engine would be smoking (blue) constantly from drivers side exhaust tail pipe.....If it was a worn valve seal or guide the engine would typically only smoke when first started up then would stop smoking.....Hopefully all you'll need to do is have the cylinder heads reconditioned.....A cylinder leak down test would tell all!
