I've got a friend who has a pretty large collection of antique cars. While I was visiting him the other day he told me to "come here and look at this". I first just saw an old blue tarp, but then he pulled it back and there sat a 348. After talking with him for a while I "jokingly"(to him i was joking, but I was serious) said "How much would you take for that?". His reply was "Which one? The four barrell or the tri-power?" Needless to say I was week in the knees. He later quoted a price of "....about 200-300 dollars for the four barreled one if I don't sell it in a week or two". I'm thinking that I can buy both of these for around 700-800$.

I told you all of this, to ask this. How much are these things worth? The four barrled one could have been a truck motor for all I know, but still it should be fairly rare. Shouldn't it? How much do the tri-powerd units go for? Just curious. Thanks for any help. Jason

348 engines can go for good bucks. A complete 348 tripower with all matched parts would bring 3k or better, according to year model and horse power rating. Tri power intakes with the matching carbs and air cleaner bring 1500 to 2000 on e-bay. I would purchase both if he wants to get rid of them. Yes, even the complete truck 348 are worth money ,but of course not as much as the car model.

Not trying to screw him over:noway:. He's fully aware of what he has. He's been into cars longer than I've been alive. He got the motors in a cluster of stuff so he paid little to nothing for them and as long as he makes a profit, big or small, he's happy. I even told him that the tri-power would be next to impossible to find another. I bought a 68 Nova back half from him this summer(door jam to rear bumper). It looked brand new. He wanted 350$. Before buying it I told him that he could sell it for three times that over the net. He simply said "I don't want the hassle." But just to clarify. I am not trying to rip him off or mis-lead him in any way. Jason

Oh man,,,,,! I had one of those once! A 348-tri power 350 horse, in my 61 Chev bubble top. The whole neighborhood knew when I got on-it. Smoke didn't clear for an hour. Pulled the engine in 67 and replaced it with a 360 horse 396. Left the old engine outside next to the gas station that I used to swap the engines. Somebody stole it. I didn't care. Times change in 40 years.;)

Jason, they sent me to sensitivity training, and the teacher quit.:D
I apologize if I made you feel I was insinuating something bad:noway: on your part. I just instantly thought to myself of all the times I've had guys say "Man you know what that's worth don't you?". Generally I do, I just want rid of something sometimes so I can definitely relate to your friends position. And then there's been a few times I was about to screw up:D, if a friend hadn't stopped me.

I had a 348 tri-power in a 58 Impala. It was so great!

I love these old "W" engines about as much as I love the little-bitty, short-stroke SB's of old from back then b/c I went so many miles in them as a punk kid back in HS!!

My Buddy Jerry had a '58 Bis. w/ a trip/348 in it that I swear musta been a 350hp/348 motor b/c of the way it flat RPM'd!!

Sucker ran like a hopped up short stroke SB!!!

GM missed the boat when they didn't use the 400 block w/ the 350 crank to create the same engine later, but in the SB!!

And to think of a 3.5" stroked, 4.375" BB that would be along the lines of a hopped up 409 "W" engine that would darn near wrap to the moon EXCEPT for the heavy as all h-ll solid "slanted" domed pistons they used back then..

And I installed an 11.25 to 1 CR, trippped equipped 409 "W" engine, (421"), in my 1st Gen. Camaro car way back about '73 and had a $10.00, 396 crank in my parts bin to stroke it w/ out to 452 or something like this later??

Jason

Here's a website with a message board and for sale section. Might put an add in to see if you get any bites.

Paul, the 348 was a 3.25 stroke. Hey, maybe I should bore my 327 .125 over and make it a 348! ;)

Oooop's RIGHT Mark, I missed it, 3.25"/327 crank AND the 400 block!!

Talk about a motor!!

I would love to have a 4.625" b x 3.5" s = 470" BB to PLAY with up in the 8,500 rpm range just for the fun of it!!

This is the same reasoning that I wanna make another old junk301, but shift it above 8,000 this time!!

Show the ricers what CHEVY V-8 power and RPM'S is all about!!

Big AND small block!!! He, He!!

Oh, and btw, hunt up a 400 block and get some spacer bearings and have at an 1/8" overbore/327!! He, He!! Fine by me!!

"Ricer's", right............................

I'd get the little old 470" short-stroked BB up to about 975 hp or so is all in full race trim! Certainly wouldn't be a street motor by no stretch at 12 to 1.

I'd shift it at 9,500 rpm!!!

How in the heck can the geometry of a BBC valve train see 9,500 RPM's????

Just curious on that 470...you might have posted earlier, but what bore and short stroke are you using to get the 470?? Thanks!

4.625" b x 3.5" s = 470" is all..................

And I think that the 4.70" b x 3.60" s = 499" Pro-Stock BB's of old will run like this too!

They used to install 348 and 409 crankshaft's in the early BB's when they had cubic inch rule limitations, and boy, the short-stroke suckers would go above 10,000 rpm back then.

This is part of the VERY RICH racing history our "W" engines and BB's have if you want to look into it!!
