I have a 68 SS that I am building a new engine for. I want to run a single plane intake like an Edelbrock Victor JR or a Dart. I also want the engine to still fit under the stock hood as I have the whole car being frame off painted right now and don't want to build a killer bullet only to find it won't fit. I plan on a drop base air cleaner and possibly a shorter air cleaner element. I don't have the insulation on the underside of the hood so that helps a little. I have planned a short deck Dart block so the height under the manifold will be no different than the 396 I yanked out. Help Please!! I love the look of the stock hood with the carb stack hood louvers and would hate to pull off $500+ worth of new hood to install a tall cowl hood.
Thank you and Merry Christmas!!!!!

I think any mid-rise intake will be fine with a drop base air cleaner a thin element will just add to the clearance.I've got a GM crate with a mid-rise/drop base with a 3" element and SS hood and no issues

Edelbrock and most other intake manufacturers publish height specs for thier manifolds.

I have a repro SS hood on my 68, small block car, perf rpm, 1" spacer, edelbrock carb.
Edelbrock sells 2 drop base air cleanrs *you have to dig some for the second one, which is 3/8" taller than standard, and mad to clear the electric choke on an afb style carb.

So... do some homework and find out how tall all this stuff is.

On my car, all the above with the standard ede drop base aircleaner and a 3" filter, fits.

With the 3/8" taller air filter assy, it does NOT fit.

I had a Vic Jr. under a flat hood in my 68 with a dropbase air cleaner and 3" tall filter on top of a Holley 750dp.
Big block or small block car?

Edelbrock publishes the height of their Victor Jr intake, the problem is finding the height of the factory unit. I don't know how much space I have to play with as I didn't take a measurement before yanking the old mill. I intend on using a 900-950 cfm Barry Grant 4150 style carb so I would think the rest of your combo is spot on.

Jim, correct me if I am wrong but a big block has a taller deck height to start with right? I would assume that your 1" spacer is the equalizer here. I would run a mid range (similiar to your Performer RPM) but they don't breathe enough for the 3500-7000 powerband I am centered on. Trying to have my cake and eat it too.

I have 2 examples here.

The first one is a 68 SS with ZZ502, Edelbrock Air-gap, 3" element and drop base. The inner structure of the original SS hood has been removed under the louvers, and you can see through them. (I don't have pics) And it has less than 3/8" clearance.

The second is a 69 with a stock SS hood, 396, also with the Air-Gap. As you can see I had to use a 2" element, also using a drop base. It has less than 1/4" clearance. That was only acheived after using the lowest drop base I could find which was from Holley, as I recall they called it the Avenger series air cleaner..

Don,
that is perfect with pics and all!! Can't ask for better than that. I can use the edelbrock spec sheet for the victor jr and see that it would take a whole lot of work to get it under the hood. Maybe I'll just go for a smaller cam and lower rpm powerband to work with a dual plane intake :(
I was wondering why everyone had a cowl hood out there....

'cause they look cool! I'm sure that for most owners clearance is the second-most common reason and performance is a distant third. GM put them on the market two years too late is all.

:D
I like to stock hood with the carb stack louvers look. I am going for a sleeper and the cowl calls out to much attention. I am also sticking with the ralley wheels(albeit wider 15" similiar to the corvette ones) over aftermarket giant hoops. I know that isn't everyone's cup of tea but I figure GM had it right 40 years ago, else the price of these cars wouldn't be what they are today.

The earlier Edelbrocks with the canted carb and a drop base air cleaner fit no problem. Just make sure you have the big block frame mounts.
earlier victor junior or are you referring to a dual plane? I do have the big block mounts along with all new suspension everything waiting for the bodyshop to finish the paint......I hate waiting. Spring will be here before you know it!!

first hand and $400 later, the dart will not fit...
Was it even close, like removing some of the inner structure of the hood underneath the louvers would help, or nowhere near fitting?
Thanks
