I have a book that lists all the options you could get on your new first Gen when ordering it back in the day. Its weird to see how the options were priced back then. Some of them seemed very strange. Most glaring to me was the cost of A/C as an option back then.

For example: In model year 1967 Air Conditioning was a $356 option..a lot of money back then for sure. What i found bizarre was that the L35 option (the 396 engine with 325HP was only $263...less than the A/C option. Thats really weird for me for some reason. In fact the whole SS option with the 350 was only $210...much less than A/C.
By 1969 air conditioning on a 69 Camaro would cost you $376....while the L78 396/375hp option cost you less than that at $316.

I understand that none of those options were cheap in that day..but does it seem strange to anyone else that you paid more for A/C than you did for the L78 option..or any SS package for that matter??

It does make sense. When changing engine packages, you aren't really adding complexity, mostly substituting size and configuration. The same can be said with the SS option. You swap a hood with a different shape and one additional element (louvers), or stiffer suspension for standard springs. With AC you introduce lots of parts and complexity not present on the base model.

That makes sense. It just seemed weird how we lust after the BBC cars today..and rightly so...but back in the day you could have one of them for less than the price of A/C. You see cars advertised today with A/C and you think..thats a nice option but never really thought about what a big deal it was for a car to have it back in the 60s.

Craig - think about this, with AC the manufacture is adding components and not really recovering anything. With an engine option like you mention the base engine is recovered which offsets part of the option cost.

What Ive seen with my A/C option is it added rubber seal to top of radiator, deflector shields on side of radiator, larger radiator, stronger springs for the added weight of compressor and all a/c parts, even the pressure balancing valve under the drivers side is considered needed for the extra weight of a/c Ive read. Then add the suitcase and condensor and dryer and heater stop valve and vac canister for the a/c system and it all adds alot to the car in misc. stuff and labor to install it. Wiring and vac hose plumbing and different controls on the dash too. Now its become a big cost factor. Not just a drop in like a different engine.
Just my 2cents from having to work with all my a/c parts over the years :D
