Anyone running shorty headers on their 69? I'm a bit lowered and think I can squeeze an extra 1" to 1.5" clearance with the relocated collector. Is there a real loss of HP using the shorter tubes?
If the 'less restriction' or 'less mass' theories were correct the best power would be made with no headers or manifolds at all.I believe the long tube headers will bring you a higher max torque wherever that peak occurs (3500 RPM etc). How much is really the question. I think on most applications, a well designed shorty doesn't hurt that much. Some say that shorties make better HP on top, due to less "restriction", IE less mass of air to get moving all at once. THe air in the tube acts like a compressible column, the longer the column the more energy it takes to get it moving (tends to hamper high RPM breathing). But once it's moving it tends to stay moving, which is what gives the torque advantage, helping to pull more charge into the cylinders due to cam overlap etc.
That might not be the whole truth, but its at least part of it![]()
..........and that would be one Loud engine under the hoodIf the 'less restriction' or 'less mass' theories were correct the best power would be made with no headers or manifolds at all.
