I want to change my 1 wire to a 3 wire to make it charge at a idle. I was told you have to hook up a wire from the battery to one of the two spade terminals and one wire from the ignition to the other terminal. Is this right and if so which wires go to which terminal?

Look in the stickies at the top of the forum under electrical basics. I have an article there that describes one way of doing it along with some how-to info. There is also a link to the tech reference pages of this site which describes another way.

Not all 1 wire alternators can be wired as a 3 wire. If you have any of the original externally regulated charging system wiring, its best to convert and use that for a internally regulated 3 wire alternator. The alternator should have marking on the back to show which terminal is which. See pic

If you do not have any of the original externally regulated charging system wiring, post back.

Camaroman,
Did you do some reading on what I suggested about switching from a 1 wire to a standard regulator? I believe it will drastically improve your charging situation. Good luck and let me know how it works out.

I have done a little research. I don't have the original wiring. I have a painless performance harness. They show adding a jumper from the bat terminal to the #2 terminal and then connect a white wire #914 to the #1 terminal. My current problem is that I can't find the dang white wire. I was wondering if that would be a +12 volts that is turned on with the ignition switch?
