I purchased a project 67 Camaro. The engine is disassembled. The crank is a 327 forged with 2.30 main diameters and 2.00 rod diameter. The Balancer is a 8 inch balancer and does fit the end of the crank. I do not know if this is the original balancer due to the timing cover being a 6.5 inch from center of seal to timing tab. I would like to run the 8 inch balancer and I do plan to rebuild the engine and have it balanced. My question is ...Will there be a problem balancing this rotating assembly or will the engine have any problems? I am planning to spend approx $ 3000.00 - $4000.00 on the rebuild. Thanks Team Camaro

Most of the balancers will interchange as GM didn't change the snout dia when they changed the main/rod in 68.
There will not be a balance issue - just make sure you sent the damper with the other parts to be balanced.
The problem might be with the stock sway bar - it is designed to clear the 7" damper, but will interfere with the 8" on some applications.
It fairly easy to fab a couple 1/4~3/8" aluminum spacers to install between the swaybar mounts and the frame to give a little more clearance.

Thanks for the input. Yes I will take the balancer and fly wheel to the balancing shop. The reason for my question is the fact that alot of those 327 motors cam with a 4 to 6 inch balancer. The motor I plan to build is alighned with a L76 or 1970 LT1. I thought it would look skimpy/weak to have a little balancer installed. I do know there is a different balancer for a 396-350 HP vs a 396-375 HP. That is what drove my concern. Thanks again.....

Uhmmm ... 'those' 327's normally came with a 6.75"~7" Damper ;)
Small block dampers have ranged from 6.125 on the earliest 265's through 8" on the later engines.
Small Block and the 'Original" Big Block 'W' (348/409/427) engines are interchangeable.
I've never seen a factory 4" damper - but I bet they're cute :D

The early 396's were also 7" and changed to 8" for the HP and 427 units ...

Even with 302/350/396 mounts I had to make 1/2" spacers for an 8" damper to clear a fat Hellwig bar. You'll find out what you need once you get ready to put it in though. If it were me, I'd just put a good 6.75" one on and avoid all the extra work.

By the way, it will not affect balance as your engine should be internally balanced. It should be a neutral balance damper but check the back of it for a weight to make sure it's not from a 400 or something. It sounds like it's never been together if the timing tab is set up for a 6.75" damper.
