I recently bought a bare 1967 shell with no trim tag. I was wondering how could I tell what options this car had. The vin # is 124377L. I know the basic info from the vin tag but how could I tell if this is a plane jane, SS or what? When I say a bare shell I mean a bare shell, no rear end, fuel lines, instruments, nada. What would you guys do for a trim tag?

Does the shell have a gas tank? You might find a build sheet on top of the tank if it survived the elements. Without the build sheet, p.o.p., trim tag or other physical components present as you mentioned there is no way to difinitively say which options the car had. Some items on the body might help- does it have backup light holes on the lower portion of the tail pan (below the bumper line)? How about studs for vinyl top trim? You might be able to determine exterior and interior paint colors if there are any areas with surviving original paint.

Personally I would not put a trim tag back on the car. Build it like you want to and enjoy it. If you are flipping the car paint it red!

Thanks for the input. Theres no tank or anything. All i know is it was a heater car. Is there anyway to tell if it was an automatic or manual based off of the firewall.

Automatic if there is a 2-3 inch diameter cover plate over the hole for the clutch rod to fit through, directly to the driver side of steering column. It was/is screwed on with two screws.

theres alot of stuff that a little detective work will help determine at least something about the car.I'll bet the saddle mounts are still in the car,see if there for a 6 or V-8. I dont know just how bare your talkin but if the spindles are on the car are they for disc or drum brakes.Might take a while but I'll bet it'll give up some secrets!
