I am looking into purchasing a 1969 Camaro and the seller is stating that the engine is the original 396 that came with the car. He does not have paperwork for it and I dropped the tank to see if the build sheet was there and it was not.

I did get the block number off of the engine, it is 3955272

I have not checked the 3 speed auto in the car and I am not sure where to look for it. Some help here if you can would be great.

I have attached the cowl plate. The vin is 124379L520741.

Any help with this would be great. It appears to me to be the correct engine. Is the block number enough to make it numbers matching?

Thank you for the help.

A vin number on deck of motor or you can also check the date code of the block
272 is correct but I had a 396 Camaro with this block that was dated 3 weeks AFTER the car so it was not numbers matching right there in my case, GOOD LUCK.

As Vince mentioned, you should check the engine block stamps on the deck, in front of the passenger side cylinder head.
A photo is recommended as restamped blocks are not uncommon. Some of the experienced folks here can verify the authenticity.

The 3 spd auto used with big blocks was the TH400. Partial VIN stamp locations are shown here...
Cowl tag and VIN appear to be legit...
