Man this tire thing can give you a headache (I have a post about my '67 elsewhere). You're facing the same type of problem I am and it gets compounded by the smaller diameter wheels. They just don't make the tire selection in 15" and 16" tires like they do in 17" and 18". For example I'm looking at the BF Goodrich g-Force Sport and the largest 15" tire they make for 15" wheels is a 225/50, this tire has a diameter of 25.6" which should fit your wheel well (I have a 235/55-16 tire on the front of my car which is about 25.8" tall, problem is with a 8" wheel and 4.24"BS it sticks out too far and is close to the fender lip. I have the Moog 6308 springs in the front also. I'm probably going to go to a 7" wheel in the front and a 215 tire.) So I guess I'm saying you really need to decide on which tires you want and print out the spec sheet on that tire and see what the tire diameters and sections widths are for various sizes. Then decide if you can live with potential rubbing issues by going for the largest tire. Me, I'm going to go a little smaller to avoid the rub, but to each is own. If you had a buddy with similar wheel and tire sizes for a trial fit that would be perfect. But most of us have to read this board and take a leap of faith on what to buy. But as they say, "Choose wisely grasshopper" for once you buy they're yours, most places won't take 'em back if they don't fit.

It seems this tire thing is really a mystery. I have 15x7 rally's for all four and I don't want to mix the rear with 15x8's.

With the 15X7's do you think that the 225/60's will rub? My problem is compounded by the fact that I don't have any fenders on. The frame isn't even attached to the body.

What I'm thinking now is to do what you recommeded. I'm going to wait for it to be put all back together again (could be years) and test a few different sizes while it's together.

I guess I am just excited that the frame and front suspension are complete.

It's not really a mystery, there's just a lot of different combos that can fit, some easier than others.

Front tires (on 67-68) may rub at the top of the fender lip (if the backspace is not enough)
and they may rub at the rear of the wheelwell (not enough backspace or too tall a tire)
or on the subframe at the back of the tire (too much backspace or too tall a tire)

Lowering the car compounds this somewhat, tho not a lot, not as much as you'd think.

The shorter the tire is, the less problems you'll have, tho you still need to get the backspace right.

With a 25" or shorter tire, most things will fit pretty well. Taller tires get tough.
4" backspace on a 7" rim is good, as is 4 1/2" backspace on an 8" rim.

4 1/2" or more backspace on an 8" rim will very probably put the wheel into the outer tie rod end. This isn't a problem with 16" or larger wheels.

225's generally fit. 235 & 245 can fit if everything is right. Bigger has been done, but it's tough.

235 or smaller is perfectly happy on a 7" rim

You can't go wrong with a 225/60/15 on a 7" rim with 4" of BS, or a 225-55-16 on 7" w/ 4 1/2."

 

225 60 15s for the front and 255 60 15s for the rear on 15x7 Rally Rims work perfectly. I have this combo on my 68 Camaro with no issues. The 235s up front rubbed slightly and drove me crazy, so I changed them and now I am happy.

FWIW, I currently have 215/65/15 on 15x7 fronts, and 255/60 in the rear. It's a 69', but I have plenty of clearance.

 

Now that I am actually driving my car, I can comment two ways.

Stock suspension 235/60R15 -backspace - ?, but not much dish, the tires rubbed the front of the front subframe (drum brakes). With discs - no rub.

Hotchkis suspension and discs - lowered 2", the tires do hit the fender lip on a hard bump and scrape (I haven't checked where yet) when turning hard.

I am going with 17" wheel when I am completely done with my '67, but right now I may go to a 50 series tire on my 15" wheel (225/50R15).

 

Heres a picture of a BFG 22560r15on a 7"rally. Stock everything.
Good choice IMO.

 

Another 235/60R15 update. I put these on my Camaro from my '56 Chevy. They are mounted on 8" (backspacing-?) Cragar S/S wheels = NO GOOD. They scrape on the outer back side (toward the doors) of each 1/4 panel. They hit one of the body panel bolts and yes they scrape on the upper wheel well over harsh bumps. I went to summit tonight and bought two 15 X 7" Cragar S/S wheels with 4.125 backspacing. I am having 225/60R15s put on tomorrow.

Remember, I have Hotchkiss front springs (2" drop) currently with NO coil spring isolators.

The 225/60R15 on 7" Cragar S/S with 4.125" backspacing clear fine. I just got them put on today. I will NOT have to put in the coil spring isolators to move the body up a bit.
