31 or 35 spline axles for my setup?

I have been on the horn with the three big companies about a new 3rd member for my Ford 9". Two have given me the same and one wants me to upgrade even more. I need your help!

I have a 605hp630tq big block 67 camaro with a junk 9" in it. I want to upgrade from the 28 spline axles to something bigger. I also want a new 3rd member with 3:73 gears and some kind of True Trac or Locker.

This car is 80/20 street/strip. It is a ladder bar car so I am used to some noise. I am just not sure how noisy Lockers really are.

How much HP can the True Trac live up to? I know I would be fine with a Locker but that means 35 spline axles instead of 31's.

One calculator says 31 spline is fine, but when I called Moser they suggested 35 spline and some new Wavetrac Locker?

Any suggestions would be great!!!!

Thanks, Erik

my 2 cents:
I have right at 600 horse at the engine. It is street driven 99% of the time.

The one time I attempted to take it down the track a few years ago, I bent an axle, and twisted the other one. They were 31 spline.

When I upgraded, I went with a 35 spline Detroit Locker. With all the other noises I have from the car, the locker clicking isn't really noticeable.

With the money you're probably spending, I wouldn't think the difference in price would be very much.

I'd do the 35 spline setup again in my case, no questions.

31 and 35 splines are the same price from Moser. If you go with 35 splines you are limited to a Detroit Locker or a spool. If you go with 31 splines you can use a clutch type limited slip or the Truetrac, along with a Detroit Locker or spool. What will you be doing with the car? If it's just a street car then 31 splines will be fine. If it's also a serious drag car then you might need to go with 35 splines.

I've got an old Detroit Locker in my car from a '69 Mustang. It pops and jerks, but it just fits right in with the rest of my car. The whole car is noisy and jerky, so it's not a problem.

What was Moser's price? Was it around $1545 plus shipping? That's a nodular case, 35 spline Detroit Locker, Daytona pinion housing, 1350 yoke, pro street gears in a shipping/storage case.

BGH,

I can get it built locally for $1440.00+tax. That is for the S Nodular case and the Detroit Locker. DTS seems to have the best deal on the center section so far at $1370+shipping for the exact same setup as local. Moser is $1560 and Strange is $1460.

This more of a street car but I do like to drag it about every two weeks or so. It does 60' a 1.60 on a Nitto 18" drag radial. Thats easin it out of the hole.

I should just get the Locker and 35 spline and be done with it. That way I am not second guessing my self.

Thanks, Erik

BGH,

Then what case do you recommend then? I just got off the phone with Eaton a few minutes ago and they definetly recommend the True Trac. they said they have guys running in the 8's with them regularly. He also said the dimensions of the 9" True Trac is bigger so it will handle more.

I am really new to the driveline technology so I am trying to learn at the same time. I just don't want to spend $1400 and then something and brake and hear "I told you so!"

Thanks, erik

Strange makes a stronger case than the S case. Whoever priced the S case to you should also be able to get the stronger Strange case. You will have to use the 3 1/4 inch differential bearings with the 35 spline axles.
