Just bought a 1967 396. It has an older rebuild. It has forged pistons with a dome. Stamped 040, assuming 40 over. It has the numbers 2209 that appear on the piston. Looks like a TRW number but cannot find it anywhere. Sound familiar?

I'm on a tight budget, so I bought a running motor with no knocks, good oil press(40-60), good cranking press(160-165). So my plan without snowballing is to re-gasket, new head bolts and run it.

Any tips on inspecting the heads? Are hardened exhaust seats easy to see?

Newby here, so I apologize for my ignorance ahead of time. Many Q's to follow.

It is a 2406 block, with 390 heads, steel crank, dbl roller timing chain. Measured the cam lobe lift and came up with .330 intake, which is .561 valve lift.

Thanks Bill. Guess it really doesn't matter. Just curious about the origins of the slugs.

Didn't realize there was such a wide variety of choices in head gaskets. Why the different choices in bore sizes? What is the criteria for choosing thickness?
