Hey Guys, I have a questions regarding my transmission and rear. Right now I have my saginaw M20 transmission out of the car, putting in new clutch and shifter. Also working on the 10 bolt rear. I would like to repaint them both. Does anybody know what type of black finish came from the factory. They both have a glossy black finish right now. Thx Tom

Original Saginaw M20 in my vert which is how the order form is marked as well.

Hey Brian, yes my Saginaw 4 speed transmission did come from the factory equipped with RPO M20. In fact if you check the link just posted by Al, the CRG shows RPO M20 Saginaw 3915032 as an option for the 6 cylinder and V-8, 210 hp cars.

No black finish...transmissions came from the factory unpainted. Saginaws were cast iron with the typical dark gray appearance and Muncy's were aluminum.

Karl, I have been on line doing some research, beginning to think you are correct. My saginaw is painted gloss black. Not sure how to post pics on the forum yet, or I would show you guys what I have. One thing is for sure, the transmission is true and correct (numbers matching).

Tom...trust me, none were painted!

Karl, I e-mailed the little old lady who sold me the car, she (owned it for 40 years). The transmission was rebuilt in 99. They painted it then, now I have to strip it.... She broke my stones, "I gave you a folder an inch thick with ever receipt for car, its in there" Haha.......

Back in the day, I cannot tell you how many Saginaw 4 speeds I threw away when no one wanted them. Now I find myself restoring them and searching for hard parts as most parts and gears are not reproduced.

All Saginaw's were natural cast iron in color.

Here is the lastest Saginaw 4 speed restoration I did for a customer.

Nice pics Jody...... Thx

I agree. Nice pics Jody. I threw away a lot of Saginaws too, when you could buy a good used Muncie for 100 or 150.

Looks good Jody.

Thanks guys

Same here, I would encourage guys to upgrade to a Muncie and toss their Saginaw's.

Lately I have been restoring quite a few Saginaw's for customers; maindrive gears, clustergears, 1-2 shift forks, 1-2 hubs, and 3-4 hubs are not reproduced and VERY hard to find.

My tip for the day; DO NOT THROW AWAY SAGINAW UNITS!!!! : )

I would assume one day guys will be looking for all those 10 bolt rears I threw away back in the day!

Had we known then what we know now, we would need a warehouse for storage.
Agree with all of you, I don't know how many 3310-1's, moldings, starters, alts, wheels, hub caps, I threw away.

Nice restore job, Jody.
