Let me throw this out to whoever is thinking about putting power steering on their 1st Gen Camaro. I looked through Hollander parts exchange books at the local library and came up with the fact that alot of different steering gear boxes will fit. Next, I went looking for a "deal" on a new or rebuilt power steering gear box. Take a look at "Speedway" in Lincoln, NE. I bought one of their "rebuilt" power steering gear boxes worth the money and didn't need a core. (Just remember to order the one that has the correct "rag joint input shaft diameter--see below) Like less than $150.00.
I next went to "Allen Groves" for an after market powersteering pump bracket set-up because the factory stuff is "out of site" for the needed short water pump brackets in my application. Get the add on crank pulley from "Allen Groves", the rebuilt power steering pump, two hoses, a "rag joint rebuild kit" and belt from "O-Reilleys" or whatever parts store you deal with locally, a power steering pump pulley from a "recycler" (ie."bone yard") and you come up with a reasonably priced power steering conversion.

By the way the Speedway power steering gear box was a "XXXXXXXX" rebuilt unit so I know that its quality was top-notch. I'm not telling the name because word might just get back to them and they just might raise their prices to Speedway --and thus to us "gearheads".

The "input shaft/"rag jointshaft" diameters appear to be Manual 13/16" and Power 3/4". I mention this because I ordered a 13/16" diameter one for my non-power steering car.You will also have to get a new 67/68 power steering pitman arm because the manual pitman arm splined end is too small. Just double check everything before you put your money down and all should be fine. Good luck with your conversion

I was looking into doing a manual to power conversion. I called Clasic Industries as they have everything but the power steering pump pully. They referred me to Camaro Land somewhere in CA. The guy I talked to there mentioned the long and short water pump. He said if I have the short pump the pully would run $200. If I have a long one, he could set me up with the whole system (used)
for about $200 including the pully. Unfortunatly I have the short water pump. Is that what you have on yours. I'd really like to go powerif it's reasonably priced.

Gene67ss,

I bought a new big block add-on crank pulley from Groves for (I think) $50.00 when I got my power steering pump brackets from them.
I have a used in good shape small block add-on crank pulley I will let you have for $25.00. This will allow me to make a little money to pay the shipping to you and send "memcgraw" something for him sending me free (9) 1.375" long wheel studs. Just post back if you want it. pdq67
PS-- In this part of the country, they are asking $50.00 for a swap meet used one.

Gene67ss,

Scratch my prior post.

E-mail me at pdmcconnell@yahoo.com with your name and complete address and I will just give you the pulley if you want it.

memcgraw was good enough to give something to me so I will do the same thing for you. I will catch up to him one of these days and make his gift right. Good luck. pdq67

I have the numbers for all the deep groove Z/28 pulleys here somewhere...
If you need them post here and I'll post them.
CRG has all the pulley numbers posted on their web site in PDF form.
http://www.camaros.org

I know the crank, water pump and alternator pulleys are still available from GM.
The third groove add on crank pulley bolts inside the two groove pulley.

The standard pulley set has narrower grooves, less offset on the PS pump pulley.

The Z/28 pulley is cast iron, single deep groove. I don't know if it is still available from GM.

Does anybody make a mini steering box for those that need some extra clearance in that area? I have a BBC in a 69 with custom Lemon headers and I either need a FRONT mount rack and pinion(and I don't want to cut the frame if possible), or a mini steering box to replace the factory one. I would like power as I have a Hydraboost setup, but I will consider running a manual steering box to get the clearance if nothing else works, with just the power steering pump driving the brake pressure. Thoughts? Ideas? I've done some research but keep finding rear mount to front crossmember rack and pinions, or fronts that require cutting. Would like to know if a Vega steering box would work(Bolt up) and perhaps go that route. R&P would be a better alternative in my head, but will do what I can to get it going. kblack@geusnet.com Thanks.
