I am installing a new set of gill chome on a 69 camaro. The originals were held on by those inserts that go into the hole. Is this the way they came from the factory? I went to install the new ones and the curve is not correct so they will not stay tight. So i guess i need to remove the interior panels and use nuts. I figure it will pull the mouldings into shape. What do the rest of you guys do, i cant be the first person with this problem?

Yes, they need nuts. You have to snug them and let them rest before trying again. eventually they will bend a little. If you tighten all at once, the nuts will strip.
I just drilled the holes for my gills a couple of days ago! I wanted my gills to fit
flat against the quarter panel. If you notice the gills have to fit into the indentation
of the quarter panel exactly. My holes were dead on, but what happens if you were
to hold the gill in your hand and look at it, the 3 pieces on the gill is at an angle
that will not match up well with the curve of the quarter panel. Put one of your gills
in the holes and look at it from the top down, You'll notice that its sticking out from
the quarter panel even when it seeded down in the indentation and tightened down with the nuts. So that's where I modified the gill, if your brave, take a grinder to nock down the angle of the gill in the corners, on the top and bottom. I know its sounds crazy, but my gills fit flat against the quarter. I started with a flat file, but ended up using the grinder. Its a big risk, but then your only out $80 if you f-up! and Im taking the black
off the gill and making them all chrome. They spray the black right over the chrome,
so the black comes off easy!

If you dont have thin arms get one of the children to put the nuts on.
The chances are they will not fit neat if any panel work has been done in that area..
I had to reshape that panel area on one side and used my orginals to shape to fit.
I found the replacements fitted well on that side and the other that had never been touched.
A couple drops of acrylic silicone around the pins to stop any moisture getting underneath the paint or into the panel.
I dont use the nuts on most of my badges....They are stuck on with acylic silcone...small strips on the back and the car body, lean a couple heavy bits of 4x2 timber leaning up against over night.
