Any one know what the difference is in Original RS headlight Switches? 1973 Dated GM parts Book lists 2 RS switches -

1995176 - RS ex. Consol Gauges

1995177 - RS with Consol Gauges

Having some Electrical issues and the car in question has Consol Gauges but headlight switch 1995176. Hhhmmm wondering what the difference is between the 2 switches.

Thanks.

Easy, the console gauges put more current through the dimmer coil (for gauge lights). non-console gauge switches used a thinner yellowish bakelite insulator, while the console w/gauge switch had a much thicker white porcelin insulator. So there could be actually 4 versions of the headlight switch: console-w/gauges & non-console , then RS versions of console-w/gauges &non-console, which had the vacuum port for the hidden headlights. It is possible the RS version only came in console gauge versions, but I have both versions of the non RS switches that I pulled from parted out Camaros.

This is in a friends car, he is having issues with the dome/rear consol light staying on all the time, as well as there is a light flashing in the consol gauges when the headlights are on. I have checked the door pin switches with a ohm meter, they are both new and function correctly, they just create a ground circuit for those lights I think.
The Headlight switch was a NOS GM 1995176 and pretty sure it has the thin yellowish/brown bakelite insulator. Maybe a bad headlight switch, I have a non RS switch somewhere I could try I guess.

Thanks for the replys.

It might just be some crap on the contacts for the dome lights. Sometimes just twisting the crap out of the dimmer switch from off to locked on dome lights frees up gunk. Or remove the switch and spray with compressed air, and then inspect the contacts. I've only had the porcelain version of the switch in my car, but have worked on the others, and once the bakelite gets brittle it is a loosing battle.

What light on the gauge cluster is flashing?

Sounds like the dome and rear console lights are finding their own ground. Not sure what could be going on with the gauge cluster light. Flashing?

2x on turning the light switch lock to lock to clear off any gunk/corrosion.

The light behind the amp gauge is flashing.
I have tried twisting the the heck out of the the headlite switch makes, no difference and when you turn it to the manual on postion for the interior lights no difference either. It was NOS in the GM original box, was perfectly clean, no contamination I could see.
I had a good look at the ground wiring ( white wire) and can not see any problems, which makes me suspect the headlight switch.
I am going to try installing a non RS known good switch and see what tranpires.
Thanks for the suggestions!

I found the issue with the interior lights staying on, the orange/white wires in the headliner interior light where installed the wrong way in the light base and where touching each other causing a constant circuit. I am going to post in Electrical as it has other issues. Thanks for all the replys.
