Chris,

I've never had or seen the valves out of a real 302 Z engine, but I would be very suprised if the valves were longer than other small block chevy engines produced by GM. If the valves were different length the valvetrain geometry would be different and require special push rods and/or rocker arms among other possible changes.

Generally, a valve is 5"-6" long, including head and stem.
Stems are usually 1/2"-3/4" shorter than the overall length.
Sure you are asking about the spring free length?
Free length depends upon the wire diameter, spring OD, and number of coils.

Installed height of the OE GM spring, non-Z/28, is 1.70" giving 80 lbs of closing pressure.
Also the same method in checking spring rate/condition.
Spring height does not include oil deflection cover and retainer, just the spring itself.
Add spring shims to adjust height.

Pretty sure OP is asking about the tire valve stem, not intake and exhaust valves. Re: dill cap is the correct cap. Chris, I have no idea if 2 1/8 is correct, but sounds about right. Most valve stems just come in two lengths and two diameters. We always referred to them as skinny/short, skinny/long, fat/short, or fat/long. The ralley wheel with the trim ring would require skinny/long. The short ones fit and work, but just barely, as the tire inflator usually hits the trim ring while trying to inflate.

Hope that helps. I think I have an original wheel at the shop that probably has the original stem in it. It had an original 1969 assy line spare mounted on it when I got it, and the spare had only been on the ground once or twice. Still had some evidence of the little "tits" on it. I can measure tonight when I go by.

Dill cap? Is that a local term Lynn? Never heard of it.

That part about "valve stem" in the original post was a bit confusing. When you got to the part about 2 1/8", now that should have given us a clue that some were on the wrong path. Now dill cap...that sounds like a term that a kiwi would manufacture. It sure threw me. Now I wonder if my dill caps are over torqued and my dwell bearings are dry.

My Z28 has some NOS ones, they measure 1.550 from the OUTSIDE of rim to the top of the stem with out the Dill Cap on. The Dill caps say Dill 1B 627. The 1B is the dating.
2&1/8" would be too long IMO.

When I finished my Firebird I had my local garage mount the redlines. The caps were the correct Dill so apparently they are still making them as I didn't specify them. They were no charge with the mount and balance. There is two pages full on Ebay, or you can go to a tire shop and buy a box full.

Chris, look up PacecarJeff as he was selling them and should be able to fix you up. Are your dill caps originals or the new ones? Could swear there was something different about the new ones compared to the original ones but it it took a close inspection.
