Well I read many of the posts regarding the Flowmaster American Thunder system for the first gen's. I have this system on my 68 with the deltaflow 40's. I took the car out for the first time the other night and received one ticket for loud exhaust and another warning!
When I called flow master they told me to add a resonator before the muffler (theres no room in the pipe), add resonator tips ( can't find tips that will fit between the leaf spring and the quarter)or change the mufflers to a quieter brand (couldn't beleive they told me this!)
I welded this system together per their instructions, cutting the mufflers out is going to be a bitch! Besides I paid alot for this system, now I have to trash two hardly used mufflers?
What I ended up doing was forming some cone inserts from a sheet of expanded metal. This is the same material used in oil pan windage screens (remember I used to work for Moroso. Did alot of dumpster diving in the day!)Anyway, I formed the metal into a cone with a 3/4" opening on one end and a 2.400" opening on the other. The overall length was kept at 5" so that it will fit inside the tailpipe. I then made a ring 1" wide and 2.400" in dia and welded it to the cone. I have placed these cones inside the end of the tailpipe and tack welded them in. I have yet to start the car up due to an extra long honeydo list but intend to try it before the 4th. Any questions or comments would be greatly appreciated. Hope it works!
