Hi all,

As I get further into what I thought was a basic engine rebuild and as I check out everything in the engine bay, I see that the engine stands for the BB are not correct. The prior owner/butcher used small block stands and reshaped the bolt hole to a nice oval shape  Also, the z bar is for a SBC. I want to change and correct everything and have read a lot about the various engine stands and wonder if anyone has a recommendation for the best ones for a 68?

I was looking at the ones that Summit offers, but wonder if they are good, or if there are better ones. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/gmk-4020335673p

Any advise is appreciated.

Although I haven't used these particular ones, Goodmark seems to be a reputable brand name and at that very reasonable price.....I'd say go for it!

I have read quite a bit of negative info on other forums regarding the fitment of some of their other products, mostly sheet metal.
When it comes to sheetmetal, I've heard complaints about almost every manufacturer.

I would think those engine stands should be ok.

Other than the cheap price which is tempting, I wonder what makes units that are almost twice the price from other sources. I like to buy American made whenever possible.

Make sure that you use a big block transmission crossmember. If you don't the engine will sit crooked and headers etc. will not fit properly.

A big block transmission crossmember offsets the transmission mount 1/2 inch to the passenger side and 3/4 inch forward of the small blocks location.

The car already has this. The prior owner made the engine stand holes oval order to try to make things work. Everything does function, but I want it right.

That is correct.
IPhones and computer motherboards are made there too. What's the point ?
Some people actually care about buying Made in the USA when possible. I'm one of them.

Right on brother:beers:

Alternatively, you can look forward to buying the same item again when the cheap piece of  breaks, or doesn't fit!

As far as I am concerned, there could be an entire forum for this topic and I would be pleased to moderate.

Some of you may disagree, but that's okay too.

Admittedly the motherboards and Iphones from China meet high technical standards, more kudos to them.

Steel products from China are known to be soft and cheaps***.

Scat forgings are are made in China too from what I've read.

Final machining is done here.

You can preach that anti-China stuff all day but in the end, you have little choice but to buy something made there.

Anne, as you know, I'll keep asking where it's made until, well, tariffs are re-imposed. You should have seen me go ballistic when I picked up my new Bendpak hoist and found it was made in China. I hope the owners ear still hurts! If you check their web site, all you'll see is their hoist compared to the 'inferior' off shore brands. Sure, it's an OK product except for a couple of small things, like the primary cables not being able to adjust easily because some china man forgot to put wrench-flats on the swaging's so the cable can be balanced from side to side. (two post) I've still not heard back from them. But the hoist is working.

Sounds like this thread has disintegrated into a pro-America and anti-China rant. :D

I was simply pointing out that it's almost impossible to find anything totally made in america.
I have no problem buying parts from SCAT knowing they were forged over there and machined here.

On a more encouraging note, manufacturing in the good ol' USA is making a comeback due to fracking holding down the price of energy. :hurray:
