Going to start searching for a Gen1 Camaro, and I've had several cars with Muncie boxes, but was wondering about the Borg Warner and Tremec Camaros I'm seeing for sale. How good are these transmissions, what're the pros and cons?

This is in my opinion...

The Borg-Warner was the base transmission (low performance) it still is an OK transmission. With its cast iron case it is much heavier than the Muncie's aluminum casee.

The tremec was never stock in a first gen camaro.

The T5 tremec is a very weak transmission. Usually found in 3rd generation Camaro's. Many people do like these. It is a 5-speed with 5th being an overdrive. The WC (World Class) is the strongest of the T5's.

The Tremec TKO-500 and TKO-600 are aftermarket 5-speeds with overdrive. They are very good transmissions.

The T56 and T56 Magnum are good transmissions that are 6 speed (two overdrives). It is found in most 4th and 5th gen camaro's and vipers etc.

That is pretty much my limited knowledge on these.

Just put of curiosity, is it much of a hassle to swap in a Muncie for a BW Trans? Are different driveshafts or crossmembers needed? Same tail shaft, length, width or whatever? Tremec TKO?

The Tremec TKO is bit of a hassle to change, but the most of the kits are pretty good. I did it and do not regret it at all. Not even a little bit! Awesome to cruise in 5th like a modern car. Biggest pain is aligning the bell housing, but with some patience and an extra set of hands, it's not that bad. I got mine from American Powertrain, but I'm not a big fan of the cross member that came with it. I think they have changed it since I got mine... I started out with Muncie M-21, and it was fun, but the tall first with 3:55's and screaming in 4th on the highway soon put an end to the love affair. That being said, I can't shift the tremec as fast as I could the muncie...

Between the BW and the muncie swap, everything should be the same, except for the shifter and shifter mounting.

I've been running a Borg Warner World Class T5 for over 50,000 miles in my '33 Ford with a 551 hp 513 lb.ft of torque 383 Chevy stroker. Although i expected the trans to give up early, it's about the only thing that hasn't. Twisted the driveshaft, twisted the 9" Ford axles, tore the face of the Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch, but the trans keeps hanging in there. I'll change it to something stronger when it goes, but it's taken a lot of abuse. I just run 255 street tires though, so that is my safety link....if I got better traction, it might have gone sooner, oh and it's done countless burnouts and many all out runs through the gears.

All good information. Top candidates I'm looking at are Muncie-equipped, one has built Tremec 6-speed. All are extremely long distance cars, I'm trying to get people to check them out for me.

I have had good luck with the Muncies and have a 75 Borg Super T10 4 speed in my BB car and like that too. Some say the Borg is a little stronger, but either are great street trannys...
