The spring doesn't seat in the lower control arm - it seats at the top, in the spring pocket in the frame, 3/8" from the stop. The hole in the recess in the lower control arm is just for drainage.

For reference, my all-original/untouched '69Z measures 5-1/2" from the bottom of the subframe to the floor, with 215/65-15 tires; the suspension is about 3/4" below original "J" and "K" ride height specs, but it sits dead level.
