Well, we went to that sale on Thursday and then Friday morning and it was their last sale weekend before the auction in September. The sale has been going on at various times since early June when school let out. I will probably be at the auction. They are always bringing out new stuff. I bought a couple of old car radios and my research shows that they are a 1977 and a rare '68 or 78. Both appear in excellent condition and one has a surprise...

I believe one to be off a Cadilliac, the knobs are similar to the decos on the ashtray & cigeratte lighter assemblies he gave me (yes, for free). I could be wrong. I also read where the other might go to an Olds Toronado . I would like to know how to test these. I have no car much less the one for these. I only spent $2.00 ($1.00 each) for these.

I had pictures of Thursday, but those mysteriously disappeared. If anyone wants to see, let me know and I'll post them

I just checked, nothing you've posted has been deleted or edited...

To test you need a car batt, some wire and a couple speakers. I would build a box to mount the speakers and hold the battery all pre-wired so all you have to do is patch in the radio if you think you might run across more radios...

No, I meant the pictures disappeared off my camera. Would a 12 volt battery from one of those Power Wheels things work? As for the "book" that is an 8-Track. I've had that tape since I was 8 or 9, I'm told it should work, never tested it though. This is my first 8-Track player, it would be cool see it work. I used to have the Star Wars soundtrack but I sold it. Wish I hadn't now.

I would like to know how to test these.
I would get the plugs that go into the back of the radio's either off of a donor car or they might still be available special order through a local car stereo shop.

They both look like mid 70's to early 80's radio's and the plugs that may work for them are made by Metra electronics (part number 71-1677-1).

If you want to post pictures of the plugs I may be able to tell if the plugs are still available. Some GM radio's had the wiring info stamped onto either the top or bottom metal plate of the radio's chassis.

With an old 8 track, you may have to replace the belt and it might have deteriorated and fused itself to the pulleys inside.

If you test it yourself, I would also fuse the power wires so if something is wrong you won't let additional smoke out of the inside of the radio. Don't guess at the wiring or you stand a very good chance of damaging them.

The Cadillac's and a couple of other of GM's high end cars had those 'rope-details' on the nobs

I kind of thought I had to post pics of the plugs. It looks like there are two ground and two neutral wires . I could guess which ones are for the speakers. I knew not to assume which I am asking here first. I tried to look at the diagrams, but that lost me. They do have I.D. tags (like VIN numbers) on the sides.

Neither or these radios appears to be a 68...they both appear to be late 70's.

Hey, I know how it is. No matter how much you put in a post, someone always wants more info.

The top one is not too clear and I can't help with that one BUT the bottom one I can.

The bottom radio is missing the top plug. This can he had (or removed) from just about any mid to late 70's GM car or truck. The top plug out of a car may have 3 wires in it or possibly 4. The variable is if the vehicle had a power antenna. This missing plug will be made out of black plastic.
On this black molded plug the yellow wire is the accessory 12 volt, the black is a chassis ground, the gray goes to the vehicles dash light circuit, and the power antenna I "think" was a pink ?.

Wiring for the White middle plug:
Left Front speaker (+) Tan
Left Front speaker (-) Gray
Right Front speaker (+) Light Green
Right Front speaker (-) Dark Green

Wiring for the Blue bottom plug:
Left Rear speaker (+) Brown
Left Rear speaker (-) Yellow
Right Rear speaker (+) Dark Blue
Right Rear speaker (-) Light Blue

I got some of the info off of "the12volt.com"

They look like they go back to 1969 in the chevrolet section on wiring.

You can wire up 4 or 8 ohm speakers on the bottom radio but I'm not sure on the top radio you showed. Watch some of the new car speakers out there. Today I got some samples of some Polk audio speakers and they are 2.7 ohms to go up against the new Infinity speakers that are also the same resistance and with something below 4 ohms it may damage the bottom radio.

If you can get a clearer picture of the top one I might be able to help with that one also. Either that or I have to get a better monitor here at the house.

Yep, I believe Jim is correct  Missing the yellow/black/grey wire plug.

I was just looking at the wires existing without realizing the missing plug at the top :clonk:

I had to put a stock radio in an 81Z (similar to the lower one in the pic) a couple weeks ago to replace some junk aftermarket unit. All the original wiring was still there (though "fitted" for the af unit), so I didn't really have to delve into the specifics as much as just figure out what was what. The unit had the grey/tan wires, as well as what I think was another for power antenna, but the car only had center dash speaker (green wires) and windshield antenna.

Thank you so much for your help guys. Does anyone have a spare one of those black plugs lying around? I could call a junkyard in Piqua but they specialize in '93 and newer, even if they had the car, they are a pain to deal with.

Here is a clearer picture:

The spekers came off a stereo and are 6 OHM's and have maximum capacity of 5 Watts (W). Will these work?

Could I use one of those 12 Volt batterys out of one of those "Power Wheels" things for this?
