Ok, I am replacing my Rally wheels with SS wheels and I want opinions on whether I should use Goodyear polyglas F70-14 RWL or Firestone F-70 Wide Ovals Redlines or BF goodrich radial TA's. The replies to this post will weigh very heavily on my choice, so be sincere. I have a leaning but I am not going to reveal it now. Keep in mind that this car does not get driven that much (500 miles a year). Thanks.

OOPS, I meant to post this under bench racing, administrators, please move.

I personaly like the BF Goodrich TA,s Although they dont hook worth a darn, I think they are a nice looking tire.
Incedently, I just happen to have 5 of the SS wheels that are just sitting around collecting dust. I used to have them on my 68 SS/RS 396 car. They looked great but I like the 15" Ralleys a little better.

Nick, what kind of shape are your wheels in? Do you have the center caps and trim rings? Email me.

The bfg's would be your best bet if you put more miles on the car. The goodyears and firestones would give it a more vintage look. I like the firestones personally but think more of us need to put more mileage on our cars and enjoy them for the driving experience...

I went a bit extreme with 17's but the complements have gone 10 fold at shows and club outings. There are some great 16" wheel and tire options out there that would really complement your rsss. Just something to think about...

I guess that i should add that I plan to take this car back to bone stock in appearance and it is a show car not a driver. I understand your sentiment Dennis, but I don't intend to screw this car up. I am building a 70 Nova for fun and streeting ( and probably some drag racing). I am also always looking for other Chevy muscle cars, projects, finished or anywhere in between. Hey, I would even be interested in a Challenger!

Dennis, all I know is F70x14, no build sheet is available unfortunately. Gotta say with my color combo, I am not leaning towards the redlines.

I had Polyglas tires with SS wheels on my car before I put the Torque Thrust wheels on. I switched to BF Goodrich. The bias ply's aren't that bad if your roads are in good shape and don't have a lot of ruts and holes. Otherwise the car will wander and follow every line. If your roads are smooth and straight the Polyglas's will look cool and handle decent. If you drive on curvy roads or rough roads then go with radials.

Also keep in mind the me-too factor of the BFG Radial TAs. There certainly isn't anything distinctive or unique about putting those tires on a muscle car. However, there's a reason for that -- they look great and are cheap.

The Polyglas or Wide Ovals will definitely be more distinctive. And, since the car will apparently be a sitter (rather than a driver) the tires may as well be made of concrete.

If you're looking for a raised letter tire (not outline), some other considerations might be
Firestone Firehawk
Goodyear Eagle NASCAR (for a really distinct look -- raised gold letters)
Mickey Thompson Indy Profile
Hoosier Radial GT

Good luck.

I have decided on a radial tire, if and when I decide to stock this car, I may switch to the Polyglas tires. Right now it shows in the street class at Super Chevy Shows. How do you think the Goodyear Eagle 1 Nascar Tire size P225/70R14 RGL overall diameter 26.4 Tread width 7, would look and fit on the SS wheels, keep in mind my car is Azure Turquoise with Black vinyl top.

I think the size will work well. 225 is a decent width. The 215 I have on mine seem a bit too narrow. I used to have 225 and liked them more.

The second part of the question is about the RGL + turquoise paint.

I did a bit of research a few months ago on the RGL and was able to find around 15 pictures on the web of various cars with the RGL. None of those pics is of any shade of blue or green car. So, unfortunately I can't help you there. I have a few of red cars (including a cobra), some grey monte carlos, and a ~66 Mustang fastback. No camaros, though.

Let me know if you want any of those pics. I'll zip 'em and post 'em.

I did see an 80s style camaro (IROQ) on the road with the RGL tires. It was a deep marroon and the tires looked really sharp.

Good luck.

For what it is worth, I've got a fathom green '69 Z with BFG radial T/A's that I've had on there since the late '70s. They're on the old style American 200S rims that were put on at the same time. The car's been in storage for the past 20 years, which is why these tires are still on it. If I remember correctly, the rims were either 15x7 or 15x8, I forget which. As for the tires, they're FR60-15s all around.

If you'd like to see a picture of what it looks like, go to the link below. Ignore the dust on the car. That is the first time I've had it out of the garage in a LONG time, but it will start seeing more daylight as I'm ready to start restoring it.

Well, I changed my mind again and just ordered 4 Firestone Wide Oval G70-14's RWL.
Went the originality road (I know F70's were stock but wanted the wider tires). Opinions?

#17 ·
I think the older style tires look really cool.

I'm still a year off from "needing" new tires, but I'm definitely considering the old Firestone/Goodyears. The only problem is price, as they're around 2x more than the radials.

If you do ever drive your car, be sure to post how you like the bias ply tires. Also, where did you buy your tires?

I originally ordered the tires from Coker Tire Co. but they called me back and said they were back ordered and couldn't get them to me until late Oct. I found a set in stock at Universal Vintage Tire in Hershey, PA (1-800233-3827) for the same price (128.00 per tire plus shipping) and they are being shipped today. Guys, my car does get driven, it is just not a daily driver. I drive it to all the local shows and cruise ins and on nice weekends. I didn't need the tires or the wheels either, I just wanted a different look from the Ralleys and BF Goodrich Radial TAs. It is turning out to be quite an expensive switch but I think I will be happier in the long run. So, I guess I have some 15in. Ralleys and like new TAs for sale if anybody is interested.
