Using the resistor wire you're only getting about 9 volts to the HEI, it needs full battery voltage. Some people cut the resistor at the bulkhead for the fuse block and splice a wire from there to the HEI. I just ran a 14 gauge wire from the IGN terminal on the fuse block inside the car to the HEI. There's usually a rubber grommet somewhere on the firewall you can get the wire through.

If it's an 18 gauge wire in the new harness that connected to the - terminal of the the old coil it's the tach wire not a ground. Most of these cars had a braided ground strap that went from the firewall to the intake.
