Help!! There's Gas In My Oil

I have a 79 camaro with a 350. The other day I checked my oil and it was really thin on the dipstick. I smelled it and it smelled of gas. Right now my car has a hard time starting, and when it does start it wont idle on its own. What would cause gas getting in there and would that be why my car is running poorly?

Holley carb by any chance? A blown power valve or a stuck needle will cause this. An excessive amount of fuel is being pumped into the intake and it eventually runs past the rings and contaminates the oil. Watch out for hydraulic lock!

Don't run it and change the oil now. My guess is a bad fuel pump. If you run it anymore without new oil you can just take your time and do a whole new rebuild since the bearings will be shot.

Years ago a 63 Impala I was riding in caught fire because of gas in the crankcase! My buddy “repaired” his fuel pump leak by driving a nail into the small hole in the side of the pump. This hole is designed to leak fuel out before it enters the crankcase in the event of a pump diaphragm failure. He had to tear down the 327 and replace the bearings, replace the wiring harness, and repaint the hood. The inside of that engine sure was clean but the bearings were worn down to the copper.

Hey guys thanxs for all the help. I ended up checking the spark plugs and they all were dry as a bone. No fuel in the cylinders. Checked the compresion and all eight were between 140 - 150. So I decided to replace the fuel pump. So far everything is awesome no more fuel in the oil. Thanks again
