I need advice about the 10 bolt 8.5"

I have decided to go with a 10 bolt 8.5" rear end from an early 70's Nova for my first gen. I can go one of two ways. I have located one for $500 that is in excellent condition with a fresh posi rebuild and 3.42 gears ready to drop in or I can score a non posi rear that needs to be rebuilt for $50. I'm tempted to get the cheap one and buy all new stronger axles, new posi unit, etc and spend about $1200 to have piece of mind. The car will have a lot of power, but I don't intend to launch it real hard and I'm just not sure how strong it needs to be. What would you do? Is it worth it to spend more and get the 30 spline axles and all that? Thanks

If it has a posi in it odds are it will be the same Eaton that you were going to buy. As there are not a lot of choices out there otherwise (Detroit locker makes a sure grip for 4 series gears, and there are mini spool spider gear replacements, etc.). Additionally the after market 10 bolt axle is bigger in diameter than the 12 bolt axle.

One further aside; I ran a 8.5 10 bolt for three years with a ZZ502/502 in a 4,300 car with 4.56 gears and never broke a thing running 11's. Properly preped the 10 bolt could put your Camaro on it's back bumper if you could twist it hard enough as I have seen many a similarly equipped car do it.

Which posi does the $500 rear end have in it? If it is the Traction Lock then a new Eaton will be stronger. If it already has a new Eaton in it then a set of Moser 28 spline axles will make it stronger. Chances are that you will spin the axle tubes inside the center casting before you break a Moser axle.

If you decide to build the other rear end then it would be a good idea to have the axle tubes welded in before you build it. Get an Eaton posi for street use or a Detroit Locker for drag racing.

I had Bluegrass classics rebuild my 8.2 gear in my 67...342 pos pretty much stock...they did it complete for 950.00 about 2 years ago...when i picked it up he said "bolt it in and give it hell" which is exactly what I have done with a 330hp crate motor and 5spd tremec trans ...never had a problem...would highly recommend those guys
