Hi guys, I joined a few weeks ago and have been snooping around and figured I introduce myself. I currently don't own a Camaro and am alittle ways away from making a purchase. I did own a 2001 Pontiac Trans Am 6 spd(hence the user name...lol) but I sold it shortly after my daughter was born.

This is why I feel im alittle different, I never owned, driven, or even ridden in an old muscle car. I'm at a point in my life where I can afford to have a "toy" for lack of a better word. Just looking at these cars, watching videos and watching guys on here build them, this is what I want. I have been a mechanic(heavy equipment) for 10+ years so I know my way around a wrench and did alittle work to the trans am.

Right now I am currently in research phase, I research everything I buy. It took me 4 months to decide what tv to buy...lol. So I am hoping to get out this summer and try and find some car meets and shows that I can go to and snoop around. I'm looking at all the cars I can find and see what they are selling for based on options and conditions. I'm not rich by any stretch but would like to find a nice driver for under $30k. Id love to build one from scratch but having a young child It wouldn't seem fair to spend all my time in garage. I want something turn key for now and I can modify as I see fit as I go along.

So I think that's about it for now, if anyone has any advice im all ears. and if anyone is in the eastern Baltimore county area and knows of any shows or meets let me know. or if you wanna take me for a ride that would be even better :smile2:.

Thanks
Matt

Welcome Matt! Good that you are doing you research! We hear quite a few horror story's AFTER the purchase, its a shame. So you need to put what you want in categories, year, body style, engine, trans, options and type (stock, pro touring, etc). That will give you guidance on what to look for and watch out for.

i.e. if you are going for the modded of full pro-touring type, then having (and PAYING for) original drivetrain is not that important as well other numbers. But if you are looking for stock types, you can pass by the heavily modded cars.

BTW, plenty of MD users here, maybe that will help with that ride :) I am a little further away :D

If you have not been to the Camaro Nats in Frederick MD (June), I suggest that is a good place to visit.

Kev, you going to the Nats ? I'm leaning that way so far.

Matt, welcome to TC. :beers:
You seem to know your stuff when looking at what you want, maybe over think it a bit, but not a bad thing.
Do a lot of reading, and don't get hung up on a shiny object ;)

It is on my bucket list, but it a 4 hour drive for me and I'm not happy about leaving my car outside while in a hotel. Since I do not have a trailer I am stuck without a solution :(

Thank you sir,

yes i will eventually be going for pro-touring/ls swap. Matching numbers and originality are no where near as important and having a good solid starting point. Right now two deal breakers in my search are going to be a canvas roof(as in it must not have one) and it has to be manual...lol. Atleast then i'll be happy driving it until I can do ls/t56 swap.

Yes I just recently read about camaro nationals...i have never been and will do my best to get out there this year.

Welcome Matt. There is an upcoming show/meet in Hunt valley. Hunt valley horsepower? It's every Saturday 8-10am. The opening day is April sometime. Not sure. Trying to find out myself. There will be about 1000 cars there. From muscle cars to exotics and everything in between.

Doug, I would probably prefer a 69, i've been reading that you can fit more rubber under those without cutting the car up. And thats one thing i dont want to do, atleast not for a long while is cut the car up and do a mini tub. I hope this isn't blasphemy saying this, but ive even seen quite a few early second gens i wouldn't mind owning....

Yes, Ive heard of hunt valley horsepower, they used to call it cars and coffee. I think your right, its between 8-10am but i think its already started. I looked them up on facebook.

looks good doug! and thanks mike...yeah i should be able.

Is there a season when cars like these become more for sale? Like i would assume spring and end of summer are probably "hot" times when the market picks up. I am going to avoid dealers at all cost if possible....but i never say never.

69 camaro on SearchTempest
some one had suggested this site in another thread
ive looked here a lot
Cars On line.com: Classic Cars For Sale

the beginning and the end of the season seems to be the most interest selling and buying, I look everyday pretty much there's decent cars out there just takes time and patience.
best of luck

Welcome, Matt, good luck with your project.
Sixty-seven and sixty-eight have open wheel openings and with the correct wheel backspacing, most any tire width will fit.
Sixty-nine are limited because of qtr panel design of wheel opening.
It all depends upon the 'look' you want and are willing to handle and accept.
Would like to see pictures when you start.

Yeah George, that first one is almost exactly what I'm looking for. I can't pull the trigger right now but when I can that's what I'm looking for, just need to find it in a 4spd. And that second one is kinda scary but may be a good project if the car itself is solid. "Clean" isn't the word I would use to describe it when you take pics and the cab is full of trash...lol

If you find a car that was restored by Lucas it's probably very, very good. He's local to Baltimore. FYI.

Friend of yours? I'm not ready to buy, but if I was, i would definitely go look at that car based on its description.
