To my knowledge all the LS series of engines are of the same exterior dimensions and they are closer to the Gen 1 (?) series of small blocks. The LQ4, LQ9, LM7 (more ?) and other LS based engines are the same except for a cast iron block.

from information on the net :

The GM LS engine family is an engine design intended as the only V-8 engine used in General Motors' line of rear-wheel-drive cars and trucks. The LS series was a clean sheet design with little in common with the classic Chevrolet small block V8. Some LS engines are all-aluminium, especially the performance oriented engines, while others are cast iron, and all LS engines have 6-bolt main bearing caps.

"a LS1 engine weighs 525lbs"

At 525 pounds, that's got to be a fully dressed engine with clutch/flywheel and all accessories.

Here's a guy at LS1Tech who purchased a crate LS7. Fedex said the entire package weighed 528 lbs., the purchaser weighed all of the packing materials at 84 lbs, leaving a weight for the engine (without accessories) at 444 lbs, including 57 lbs for the clutch and flywheel. The basic engine would have been about 387 lbs, including the cast Z06 exhaust manifolds. http://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iv-internal-engine/398927-just-got-my-ls7-crate.html

Although there is no clear answer, it looks like even the basic LS3 engine is well below 400 lbs.

excellent! so the LS7 big block weighs less than a gen 1 iron small block. im asking because i may be leaning toward an LS7 over my original LS3 plans. I already have upgraded the front suspension with coilovers and wanted to see if the front spring rate will be adequate for an LS7 without having to sell the new set up and lose money

thanks all!!!

An LS7 probably weighs less than an LS3 because of the Ti rods, although it likely gives back a bit with the dry sump oiling system.

There is no big or small blocks for an LS engine ! An LS engine will be lighter than an old school small block !
