My son is having an issue installing a new 3:73 gear in our 68 Camaro RS with a 8.2 inch 10 bolt rear end. I bought a complete Yukon kit for this rear end to convert to posi. We can't get the 3:73 gear in install correctly. Its like the gear is too thick. Are there thick and thin gear applications or are we missing something? Unfortunately we can't return the new gear we have because my son tossed the box it came in so if we can't get this "thick" one to install we're either stuck with it or I might have to sell it and lose a few bucks. Any advise would be appreciated. Thank you

There were 3 carriers for differentials: A 2 series carrier, 3 series carrier and 4 series carrier. These are unique to the gear set being used. A 4 series carrier moved the ring gear closer to the pinion as the pinion has less diameter.
Don't know what a Yukon kit includes, but you need to identify what carrier you have and gears.

Yes, there are thick, and thinn ring gears. There are a couple different series carriers. Sounds like you've got a series 3 carrier and a set of series 2 gears. The difference is the flange on the carrier is in different locations relative to the what gear ratio you are using. This is due to the pinion gear being smaller diameter/number of teeth as the ratio gets lower. If this is the case, your only option is the correct gears for the carrier you have, or get the right carrier for the gear set you have.

IF that all came in the "kit" I would expect it to be the right ring for a carrier...

What part isn't fitting ? Gear not going in the pumpkin, or the ring not fitting the posi ?

As said above, I would ask Yukon or even double check the numbers for the posi and the gears ...

Another thing to check is if you indeed do have an 8.2" 10 bolt. Pretty popular to swap a later model 8.5" rear end into a first gen for a stronger rear end without the cost of an original 12 bolt.

As others have said if it all came as a kit I would imagine it should all fit together. Otherwise is should be on the seller.

If you and your son have never put together a rear end before, it might be a real good idea to bring it to someone. Putting it together takes some practice, and getting the pattern correct takes some patience to say the least.

That being said, what exactly do you mean by "We can't get the 3:73 gear in install correctly. Its like the gear is too thick." You need to explain this with more detail.

I'm going to take a stab at your statement - I assume you have the pinion installed in the housing. When you say you can't get it installed do you mean when you load the assembled posi carrier into the housing with the carrier races and shims, that it won't go in? I can easily see this as being the problem but it's really difficult to say be your description. If it is the problem, while alternating side to side, you can take a large dead blow hammer and carefully tap on the carrier race/shims to get the assembly into the housing. Then to take it out you'll need a pry bar.

Hopefully this helps some. Give us a better description as to what exactly is going on and maybe someone can better help you out.

Thank you for the reply. We contacted Yukon and was advised to clean up the old housing with a grinder to try to eliminate the clearance issue. We could get it in but it was rubbing a little when turning it. My sons friend, who has installed many of these at the hot rod shop he works at, is going to come over and give us a hand. He said we have the right parts we just have to do a little clean up for the clearance issue. Fingers crossed it works. I will keep everyone posted. Thanks again for the input

I am not a rear expert but I couldn’t install a 342 gear with my 4 series posi?

As already posted above make sure you don't have the corporate 8.5 10 bolt swapped in. Easy to spot it from the 8.2. It has a trianagular corner cast into the lower right and left sides of the carrier housing, the 8.2 does not, it had no corners, just round. The 8.2 only came with 2 series or 3 series carriers, there was no 4 series for the 8.2. Nobody makes a 2 series posi after market 8.2 carrier. Some cars did come with Eaton 2 series posi carriers from GM, but extremely rare to find a usable one today. I found one that was overhauled after a 18 month search.

Regarding 8.2 axle, a 3.73 I don't see as a GM option, but I know after market offers 3.73, 4.10, 4.56 for the 8.2. Never heard of additional clearance being required to be made, but who knows? It is odd the 3.73 and up kits don't mention this though if it is an issue? Let us know what you find out from Yukon and your friend. I'd like to know the answer myself 😉 info below in blue field from CRG.
