For the convertible folks, specifically 1967, are the flanges where the inner and outer mate supposed to be flattened at the top or are they supposed to be straight up?
I am replacing the outer wheel house and would also like any input as to the most efficient way to remove and replace the outer portion considering the braces and brackets.
Thanks

Hey Mike check out this video I made for my build thread...

they go up to meet, look at the old from inside the trunk, there are alot of welds in them,I did one a few months ago without the quarter on and it was kind of a pain getting the old one out, there are alot of small spot welds around them

I think they are supposed to be flattened out so the top can go all the way down in there. I replaced my inner and outer but my quarters were already removed. There was a bunch of spot welds I drilled out as well as cutting away alot of it with a cutoff wheel on the grinder. I had thought about cutting the flanges down and welding them up at the seam vs. flattening them out. Maybe someone else will chime in on a good way to do that.

Mike, definitely suppose to be flattened out. Mine were original upon disassembly and they were pounded flat. I must agree that it has something to do with clearance for the top when in the down position. Hope that helps. They are spot welded like crazy to each other and to the rear seat divider, but if you have patience it can be done. Good luck...jeff

Hi Zulu28, thanks for the video. My problem is with the convertible differences. I rough cut the 1/4 pnl to get inside where I could see better. There is a brace that runs 1/2 of the radii on the wheelhouse and is in front of the flanges leaving little room for tools, cutters etc.. I can get the spot welds from the tire side of the whouse but the gazillion spot welds on the flanges are a problem.

Fordpowerjoke, Did you have to bend the flanges up to drill spot welds? Did you remove spot welds from trunk side or tire side? Doesn't look like a lot of room to work in.

I knew there was a difference between the vert and the coupe but I didn't think that it was that major! Wow!

Mike,

The inner & outer wheel well flanges were bent down on my 67 vert. I did start to bend the flanges upright to remove, but needed to replace vs. save so I just hacked them out. The inner convertible skeleton on the radius does have numerous spot welds that need to be removed. Your internal skeleton seems to be in good condition as my flange was rusted away on the passenger side & I had to patch the driver's side. Looks like you could use at least the outer wheel well. I replaced the outer & used the DSE mini tub inners. Worked out great.

Hope you project goes smooth & have fun. Get in touch with me if you have any questions on your 67 vert. I replaced 90% of my sheetmetal from the firewall back in the past year & just installed a Speedtech front subframe & home made subframe connectors this weekend.

Regards.

Thomas
