Speedometer cable firewall penetration

I have a 1969 Camaro SS396 L/89 without any paperwork. I checked everthing on the CRG site to validate authenticity. The only thing I found odd was the speedometer cable firewall penetration is on the left and it should be on the right for an M20. I don't see any plugged hole on the right. Is this common, or should I be concerned?

CRG uses the steering column for reference. When you are seated in the car, the cable goes through the firewall on the right side of the steering column for manual trans and left for auto. My engine code is JJ which indicates manual, however, the speedometer cable on the left of the steering column.

Anybody ever see discrepancies in this area of authentication?

The only reason it would be on the left with an L89 is if the car came with a HD 3 speed (MC1). The cable is attached on the drivers side of that transmission. Do you know if the car has the original trans.?
It's not really possible that a Muncie cable would go through the firewall on the left side (at least from the factory).

No the trans is not original. It's a M20 out of a 69 Chevelle. Should there be a plugged hole on the right side of steering column that I can run the cable through? I would think the firewall would be manufactured with precut holes for all options and then plug the holes not used.

Ed,
The firewall only had one hole in the firewall for the speedometer cable and it was on the drivers side of the steering column. If the car had a Muncie 4-speed, another hole was punched at the factory for the speedometer cable on the passenger side of the steering column in the top of the trans tunnel area.
So if your car does not have the hole punched in this area, the car did not come from the factory with a Muncie 4-speed trans.

Is it possible the engine is also not original? Maybe it was an automatic car at one time.

wow......mr. mark....what a great way to make the assembly manual understandable!!!!
i have to learn how to do that. if you could only put the assembly manual on CD with real pictures to complement the assembly manual diagrams.
