Can anyone give me a description of how the speedometer cable routes on a 4 speed car with a Muncie M20 transmission. I know it hooks up to the back of the speedometer then goes through the firewall, but then how does it route to get to the transmission on the passenger side. Classic Industries sold me a 61" cable and said it was for this installation. Now I need to know how to properly route it. Thanks! Bill

I found it easier to exit the cable inside the frame rail. Down the frame rail and over to the tranny hookup at the cross member. tie wrap the cable at the cross member

However, the correct camaro way is outside the frame rail. THe cable will exit between the outer frame rail and the inner fender well. Travel the cable down the frame rail before the cross member, then cross over frame rail (between the frame rail and body), over to the speedo hookup.

Its easier to start at the trannsmission hook up and work toward the speedo. (the speedo end is not a bulky as the tranny end , so crossing over the frame rail and body is easier.

hope this helps

Also, i coverted a 69 from saganaw(drivers side speedo) to M-20 (passenger side speedo) using an extension from the local auto part store $10-$14. Routed the extension from the pass. side of the cross member (tie wrap to cross member under tail housing) over to the drivers side frame rail and connected.

THe extension length i can;t recall, but you can measure the distance needed to meet the existing cable connection(allow a little extra) and you'll be fine.

The 61-inch cable is correct for your application, if the correct trans is installed.

As Joe C suggests the proper(correct) route is for a cable to mate with a driver side speedo outlet on the trans ext housing.

But, you said you've got a pass side outlet. This will require a longer cable to be routed from the firewall, down the rail, on top of the trans cross member, loop underneath the ext housing, then make a wide turn to the outlet. I think the length is 89 to 100 inches, ones from '80's Monte Carlo's will work. Just be sure it doesn't drag on the ground and/or driveshaft.

There's an excellent illustration of the pass. side M20 cable routing in the '69 A.I.M. (M20, Sheet A9, bottom illustration). Cable exits the firewall inboard of the wiper motor in a recessed area, then routes naturally across the firewall behind the engine, into the tunnel, nice gentle sweep back to the tranny connection.

My firewall already has a 1" hole right under the master cylinder. I tried the 61" cable and it just about hooks up but would make my bends way too sharp with any route, so instead of drilling another hole in my firewall, I think I'll just send the cable back to Classic Industries and get a 71" cable. That way it will fit better and no other holes to drill. Thanks again! Bill

Do you have the adapter shown in your line drawing? Looks like a 90 degree fitting at the transmission hookup. I can't use my 61" cable without some sort of 90 degree adapter.
It's too short otherwise.

The adapters referenced in the A.I.M. aren't just 90-degree fittings - they incorporate reduction gears, usually for 4.56 axles. A speedo shop should have non-reduction 90-degree fittings, or if you use the correct production M20 cable hole location inboard of the wiper motor, you won't need any special parts at all, and the 61" cable will work fine, just as it did in production.

JohnZ is correct. I replaced my Saginaw 3-speed with a Muncie M-21. I bought the proper cable and routed it per the A.I.M. I did have to drill a new hole thru the firewall in the proper location. It was easy for me because the engine was out of the car.
