Trunk Spatter Paint Options

I am getting ready to apply a spatter paint coating to my 67 trunk. I have been reading and researching about the various products and techniques. Just wanted to ask what other's have experience or advise. Here are my options so far:

1. GM quart reconditioning trunk paint from Camaro Central
2. GURU paint kit from Thorton's
3. DupliColor rattle can from Amazon

Anyone recommend one of these or have experience to share? I am not going for concourse, but want to do the job right / factory finish as close as possible.

I have never used an HVLP gun which is necessary for the GM quart product.

Also should the trunk be uniformly painted in a chassis black before applying the spatter paint? My thoughts are "yes". Thanks in advance for the help and advice. I will be glad to share pictures and my experience while doing this for others to use. The trunk has had some metal repair work done and is not one complete color at the moment.

I would defiantly prime the trunk before the Guru. I actually have zolatone under my coating. It was not on purpose, since I chose zolatone first since its a tough paint, but was not factory spec. It worked out great since it has a tough undercoat with the factory speckle paint on top. I did a video of my painting, so take a look. Hope it helps.

I did not want something that needed to be clear coated like some aerosol trunk paints but also did not have a large enough compressor to shoot anything that needed a professional gun.

I ended up using two shades of Rustoleum aerosol. Dark paint for the dark gray background and a light paint for the dots. For the dots, I let the pressure out of the aerosol can, opened up the can, and poured the paint into a little cheapie paint gun attached to my small compressor. After a lot of experimenting with the settings, I got the gun to spit the dots like you see in the pictures.

Before I did this, I sprayed a test panel with the dark background and the dots, let it dry, then submerged it in a bucket of water for a week to make sure it would be waterproof. A week underwater did not phase it at all.

It was a little cheap paint gun from Lowes. $39 I think. It's been seven years since I did that
so I don't remember any exact settings. It was just trial and error playing with the gun settings and the compressor pressure. You had to get it just right. A bit too much pressure and the spray was too fine. Not enough and the paint would dribble out of the gun.

I must have went through 20 sheets of black poster board experimenting with the spray pattern for the dots. Every time I passed a Dollar General or Dollar Tree store, I would stop in for a couple more sheets.

You had to be careful not to overlap the passes or you would get a double density of dots where they overlapped.
