Victor intake on a BB and hood clearance problems

I just picked up me new big block today. The Victor intake is significantly taller than the stock iron intake I had one the previous BB. I am concerned that I will not be able to fit an air cleaner under my 2" cowl hood. Is anybody running a Victor and a 2" cowl hood? What size air cleaner works? Do the drop-base style cleaners restrict air flow at all? If it matters, the carb is a 4150 and I want to use the K&N filter that also has filter media on the lid.

I have the same stuff, and it wont fit under a oem cowl hood, but if you have an aftermarket fiberglass 2" hood it "might" fit. I run my BB on SB mounts, so it might be lower than oem BB mounts too.
I sold my gm cowl hood and got a 4" cowl, no clearence issues now.

You will NOT fit a Victor Jr. under a stock 2" cowl hood in a BBC with BBC frame mount application. If you are interested I have a like new Holley Strip Dominator (looks like a Vic Jr.) that will however fit under a stock 2" cowl hood. The carb base is angled on the Strip Dominator allowing it to fit under stock hoods.

Thanks for the offer, but I want to keep the Victor Jr. simply because that is how it was run on the dyno and I don't want to mess with the engine builder's combination. I was planning on buying a fiberglass hood eventually anyway, I guess it will just be sooner than I thought.

What options do I have? I really don't care for looks of the 4" cowl hood. There is a nice L88 carbon fiber hood on eBay, but I don't know if a Vette hood will look right on my Camaro. I emailed Glasstek today, and they said their Yenko Stinger hood will only give me and extra 2 1/2" over a flat hood, so that won't work. Anyone know what else would work?

I have a vic jr on my 540 with a factory cowl and and i used the reproduction big block frame mounts for a 69. I used a 14X3 K&N with a 1 1/4" drop base to do it. I also have room for 3/8" worth of heat deflectors under the carb. The air cleaner element does touch the passenger side rear of the opening in the hood and the element has a "flat spot" from it, but nothing bad. This is a factory cowl with all of the underhood bracing.

OK OK OK......I've been thinking about this for a few days here and here is the answer........ YES it will work with a factory style cowl air cleaner.
I had a 69 camaro with a big block and a big/tall DART intake. When I put the motor in I had to modify the air cleaner by taking a few inch section out of it and cut out a little bit of the front and back for the float adjusting nuts. Its a very simple modification and sealed very well to the hood and was worth .10 in ET in good weather. I know what your thinking...... It was a DART intake not a Victor Jr ....BUT......... I have since used that same Dart intake on my 69 firebird with a ram air hood and had about 1.5" of hood clearance. I have since switched to a Victor JR and now have almost 2" of clearance  The Victor JR is shorter than the DART.

Also......All my cars have the factory big block mounts so I know my measurements are correct. And yes my 69 firebird has a big block chevy.

I have recently seen my old 69 Camaro and the guy still uses my modified aircleaner. Next time I see the car I will be sure to take a photo or two for you. Its really not that difficult.

Keep the stock hood and buy a $150 cowl aircleaner :beers:

Brian, thanks a lot for the pics! I am building almost the same setup you have, but with a TH400. I almost ordered a fiberglass L88 hood from VFN today. I think I will wait until I get the motor set in place. Should get the motor in by the middle of next week. I am still waiting for the ATI converter. I was just at Summit tonight and I bought a K&N 14" by 2 3/4" with 1 1/4" drop. Maybe mine won't rub at all!

The lid doesn't rub on mine, just the element on the rear passenger side of the opening. This is due to the Vic Jr. not being angle milled like the RPM Air Gap I had on the old engine.

You might want to play with elements a little, if my element was 1/4" shorter, I think the Lid would hit the edge of the air cleaner opening and actually cause problems. As it is now, it just hits the element when the engine/chassis twist a little underpower. The hood clears the air cleaner fine when opening and closing the hood, the element just has a "flat spot". If you look closely at the picture, you can see where the paint has been worn on the edge of the opening in the hood.

I'll try to take a picture of the air cleaner and the hood for you and post them.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks, Brian

I also have a Victor Jnr on my (std deck) 454 with the GM 2" cowl hood.

I milled the carb pad (1/8" at the front and 0 at the rear) to get the factory 4 degree tilt, and I also had to modify the cowl air cleaner surround/flange so it sits low enough under the hood too.
I am also using the slightly taller small block mounts because I have a Powerglide on the stock non-BBC trans crossmember. (The BB mounts pulled the front pulley against the subframe with that trans and crossmember.)
I also have a 4" air cleaner element.
Tight fit, but it does!

See the pic on my signature, but I can post other pics if requested.

Jody, I thought I would have a problem with not getting enough air through the filter. That's why I bought the K&N Extreme filter that also has filter media on the lid. I am still concerned that even if the hood/filter does fit, how close will the top of the filter be to the bottom of the hood? How much is that going to restrict my airflow?

I have a Strip Dom. and and old 3310-2 Holley on my 496 w/ NOS BB frame mounts and poly mounts at all three spots and am having to use a Summit drop base open air cleaner w/ a 2" filter and a 7/16" thick plywood donut to get it under my stock, '67's SS hood!!

That said, I do think that if I used my oem stock 350 motor's rubber mounts, BUT NEW, that are wide and only like an inch thick by drilling them and bolting them together almost solid like I did my original rubber mounts before GM sent the recall letter out that everything would fit fine!!
