hey guys
so here is what happened.....I was coming home last nite from a block party driving down the long island expressway ***Admin Edited*** all of a sudden, my car died. my lights were still on, so i ruled out that one of my batt cables came off. i pulled off to the side and the other guys pulled over too (THANK GOODNESS) I popped the hood and all looked good. i had fuel in the bowls i checked spark by using a little wire that MSD tells you to do to check it. i had spark. so i put the key in the ignition and went back to the engine. i have a starter switch located on my firewall and started the motor. it stumbled while i tried revving it to keep it alive. so i got it going and raised the idle a little just to be safe for the ride home.

Now earlier in the day i tried to solve my dieseling issue. i lowered the float levels to the bottom mark in the site window. i have the idle set at 800-900. initial is 15* BTDC total is about 32* at 3000rpm. Also when i got home it did not diesel. so sorry for the very long post. Could it have been a fuel starvation issue since i set the floats lower? I hope anyone will chime in and give their thoughts!!
thank you!!
-Steven

p.s To the two guys who helped me out by pulling over and giving me some light to see....THANK YOU!!!:beers:

Those are great suggestions. I had 14v after i got it started again. Fuel pressure is at 6.5-7 psi. i set it to that cause thats what my dyno sheet read. Funny thing, when i got into my car to leave, i stepped on the brakes before i started it and when i did hi the brakes, the interior lights came on. and went off when i released. never happened before. I guess one thing leads to another

now that i got stuck at a friends house and just had it flatbedded here a couple of minutes ago, when we got the engine started, it would run for 10 seconds then die. now my starter spins but does not pop out to engage the flywheel. can this all be due to a bad starter solenoid? also black smoke and sometimes gas will spit out of the carb. mostly on the secondary side. theres lots of black soot. when the car did run it would diesel. i have around 10.5:1 cr and my engine builder said i can use 93 octane pump gas just retard the total timing about 2*. so this is the cars last chance before i say my final good byes.
thank you

yes thats correct. i also checked the hazard fuse and it was blown. put another one in and it immediatly popped. ground issue for sure there. my battery is good, wires are tight on starter bolts too. i am going to remove it tomorrow, its too hot now even at 700pm. i'll try in the morning.
thanks guys

p.s. Im thinking of pulling out the american autowire setup and go back to stock. that way i dont have this mess of wires that i had to cut and crimp terminals on. I'd just rather get the pre-assembled stuff and follow my assembly manual.

Dennis, the carb was rebuilt while my engine was being built. it ran great on the dyno and also ran great when i first started the car. shut off right away too. after it died at my friends house,we would try starting the motor at 5 second intervals probably about 30 times until all the starter did was spin and not engage. me and my father brought a charger to see if it was low battery and still the same.

i puuled the starter today. the wires to the solenoid were nice and tight. but the starter gear was loose, there was no resistance when you pulled it out by hand. plus when you rotated it in the direction it would turn to spin the motor it was not smooth. so im thinking, that since it was easy to pull out, i dont think it ever retracted leaving the flywheel to keep spinning it against its own will therefore burning out the planetary gears/sprag assembly.
