What exactly is Astro Ventilation?

Astro ventilation is nothing more than the name Chevrolet marketing gave the fresh air vents in the dash on ‘68 and later Camaros. I bet the bean counters at Chevrolet figured it was cheaper to add the dash vents so they could eliminate the more expensive vent windows that were on the 67’s. They even etched “Astro Ventilation” on the side glass where the vent windows would be to make the 68 Camaro buyers think they were getting something special, when in fact they were getting a cheaper vent system. :D

In the late 60's, anything to do with "Astro" was cool!..'astrodome', 'astroturf', and especially 'astronauts' who in the day were real heros during the Apollo project.

In our Camoros, it's nothing but but a marketing word for taking fresh air from the plenum area and routing it through the car. Not exactly rocket science.

That is a pretty cool answer and I think it's one of the best ones!!

This was also part of the vent system through the doors and into the rear 1/4's to help prevent rust and condensation? Did it? As I understand it's supposed to work on a low pressure/high pressure type of system like the cowl induction?

Between 67's with vent windows and kick panel vents you can get lots air coming into the car and keep the windows up. It's a great vent system and works well. You just have to like them. The kick panels and dash/astro vents do not do much in comparison to the 67 Vent system. I like the 68 dash bezels I think they look great and break up the dash with cool looking vent. 67's got them but only on A/C cars. i am not sure if they called them ASTRO vents or balls in 67 on the A/C cars or not?

I was in the pre-stage lane this weekend when the last car in front of me moved to the burnout lane. I was next. Horrors! My Astro Ventilation vents were ALL wide open! I sprung into acton. Closed them up fast and made my rotation to the start line. Mustn't bleed pressure from the cowl hood.
